Dole Listeria Salads Also Sold in Vermont

We have been notified that Price Chopper stores in Vermont have been carrying Dole salads being recalled because of a deadly Listeria monocytogenes outbreak. The FDA has been notified. Vermont has not been listed among the states that received the recalled products. We contacted the FDA and the Vermont Department of Health and neither responded by press time. This underscores the fact that everyone should examine packages of Dole salads that they purchased. If the manufacturing code made up of a list of numbers that is either above or below the "Enjoy By" or "Sell By" date starts with an "A", that means that product was produced in the Springfield, Ohio plant that made and shipped the salads that made people sick. The Ohio Department of Health found Listeria monocytogenes bacteria in … [Read more...]

How Does Listeria Monocytogenes Get on Salads?

When you bring up the subject of food poisoning, most people think of meat or raw eggs. Green salads are usually the last foods we worry about in this regard. But produce is one of the leading carriers of pathogenic bacteria that make people sick. In fact, a report by Center for Science in the Public Interest last fall found that produce is the most common source of food poisoning outbreaks. The current Listeria monocytogenes outbreak linked to withdrawn Dole prepackaged salads is a case in point. We heard from many people who started eating salads as part of a program to get healthy. And they were upset and dismayed to discover that they may have been exposed to pathogenic bacteria simply because they ate a salad or two. So what's the problem? How do Listeria monocytogenes and other … [Read more...]

Michigan Hit Hard in Dole Salad Listeriosis Outbreak

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, four people from Michigan have been sickened in the Listeria monocytogenes outbreak linked to Dole prepackaged salads. A Dole brand Field Greens packaged salad was collected in Ohio in mid-January 2016 and tested positive for a Listeria isolate that was "highly related genetically" to isolates taken from ill patients. The salad was produced at the Springfield, Ohio Dole processing facility. Epidemiologic and laboratory evidence indicates that packaged salads produced at the Dole facility are the likely source of this outbreak. Dole has stopped production at that facility and has withdrawn all salads produced at that facility from the market. Illnesses in this particular outbreak go back to July 5, 2015. All of the 12 people … [Read more...]

If You Bought Dole Salads Recalled For Listeria, Don’t Panic!

We received so many comments about the Dole salad recall for Listeria monocytogenes that I thought I would write more about the illness and your risk of contracting it. Any Dole prepackaged salad with a code starting with the letter "A" has been recalled. Listeria is a dangerous pathogen, but there's no need to panic. There have been thousands and thousands of those bags of salad sold, and, even using the multiplier for Listeria monocytogenes outbreak, only about 34 people have been sickened in the United States and Canada. Your odds of actually developing the illness are quite low. Second, if you did purchase a bag that was recalled or ate some of the recalled salads, be aware of the symptoms of listeriosis, the illness caused by this bacteria. Symptoms include flu-like fever and … [Read more...]
