FDA Finds Salmonella in Sunland Inc. Nut Butter Production Facility; Recall Expanded

The Food and Drug Administration has just released a report saying they found Salmonella at the Sunland Inc. nut butter production facility in New Mexico. Products from that plant have been linked to a Salmonella Bredeney outbreak that has sickened at least 35 people in 19 states. The government is conducting more analysis to identify the specific strain of Salmonella found. The recall of Sunland products has been expanded to include all products made in that facility between March 1, 2010 and September 24, 2012. One hundred thirty nine products are being added to the recall, bringing the total number of products recalled to 240. Costco Recalls Smoked Salmon for Possible Salmonella

Costco Wholesale has issued a recall for Kirkland Signature and Foppen smoked salmon for possible Salmonella contamination. The fish is linked to a Salmonella Thompson outbreak in the Netherlands, according to the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment. Almost 250,000 customers in the U.S. have purchased the salmon in the last month. The Foppen brand fish was made by Foppen at a plant in Greece. The Kirkland brand fish was made at a plant in the Netherlands. Only the Foppen brand has tested positive for the bacteria. Both brands were recalled out of precaution. The brands recalled are Foppen Norwegian Smoked Salmon Slices in 12 ounce packages, and Kirkland Signature Norwegian Imported Smoked Salmon 2 x 12 ounces. Whole Foods Market Recalls Forever Cheese Ricotta Salata For Possible Listeria

Whole Foods Market is recalling ricotta salata sold in 21 states and Washington D.C. because it may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. This is an update of a previous recall. There is a nationwide outbreak caused by that bacteria that has sickened at least 18 people in 12 states and D.C. The recalled cheese was cut into wedges, packaged in clear plastic wrap, and sold with a Whole Foods Market scale label with the PLU 293427. In the four stores in California and Arizona that sold the cheese, it was marked with a Whole Foods scale label that read "Mitica Ricotta Salada" and with Whole Foods Market scale labels with PLU 294413. Smoked Salmon Salmonella Outbreak in Netherlands; Product Sold at Costco in U.S.

According to the Dutch Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority, smoked salmon manufactured by Foppen Paling en Zalm has been linked to a Salmonella Thompson outbreak in the Netherlands. The salmon has been recalled. An announcement was made through the EU Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed on October 1, 2012. There have been reports that 100 illnesses in America are linked to the recalled salmon, but the CDC has not made an announcement and is investigating, along with the FDA and USDA. These are the states that are investigating Salmonella Thompson illnesses: Arizona, Illinois, Maryland, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New York, Texas, and Virginia. XL Foods Beef Recall for E. coli 0157:H7 Expanded for 13th Time

The CFIA is warning the public to not consume certain beef products from XL Foods because they may be contaminated with E. coli 0157:H7. This is the 13th time this recall has been expanded. About 1/3 of the Canadian beef supply is affected by this recall. The brands recalled now include The Kitchen Table and Brooks Meat Packers. The products were sold at Entrepot de Viandes, Brooks Meat Packers, Co-op, ValuFoods, Village Mart, Real Canadian Superstore, Extra Foods, Real Canadian Wholesale Club, Dominion, Real Atlantic Superstore, Save Easy, Loblaws, Provigo, Valu-Mart, Your Independent Grocer, and Zehrs. Attorney Calls for More Cheese Testing After Expanded Ricotta Salata Listeria Recall

Attorney Fred Pritzker, who has filed suit on behalf of a client injured by Listeria monocytogenes in soft cheese, has called for more testing of cheeses for Listeria contamination. "The lawsuit pointed to the need for the expanded recall of Frescolina Ricotta Salata cheese," he said. "The hope is that it will be a catalyst for additional testing of cheeses for Listeria contamination and that any other cheeses potentially contaminated with the dangerous pathogen will be recalled." The lawsuit was filed one week ago against Whole Foods Market and Forever Cheese, the importer. His client is the one CDC-confirmed Listeria case from Pennsylvania. Forever Cheese Inc. is expanding their recall of Marte brand Ricotta Salata Frescolina cheese for possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination. The recall now includes all of the Ricotta Salata which was imported from Italy. All lots and all production codes are recalled. Minnesota Victim of Peanut Butter Salmonella Outbreak Hospitalized

One of the victims of the Salmonella Bredeney outbreak that has sickened 30 people in 19 states lives in Minnesota. That person, an adult from the Twin Cities metro area, was hospitalized in late July. These illnesses are associated with Trader Joe's Valencia Peanut Butter, which was recalled last week. Since the original recall, Sunland Inc. has been announced as the maker of the peanut butter. Many of that company's products have been recalled; the recall was expanded yesterday to include other types of nut butters and whole peanuts. "This outbreak will most likely grow, and more states will be included in the case count," said attorney Fred Pritzker, who represents Salmonella victims nationwide. Salmonella Bredeney Outbreak Associated with Sunland, Trader Joe’s Peanut Butter Grows

The CDC has just updated its investigation into the Salmonella Bredeney outbreak that is associated with Trader Joe's Valencia Creamy Salted Peanut Butter with Sea Salt. A collaborative investigation indicate that product is a likely source of the outbreak. So far, 30 people are ill in 19 states. One person in Nevada has been added to the case count. Salmonella lawyer Fred Pritzker has been contacted by potential victims of this outbreak and has launched an independent investigation. Sunland Recalls Peanut and Almond Butter for Possible Salmonella

Sunland Inc. is recalling Almond Butter and Peanut Butter products because they may be contaminated with Salmonella. The Trader Joe's recall of its Valencia peanut butter and association with a Salmonella Bredeney outbreak that has sickened 29 people in 18 states may be related to this recall, since Sunland makes that brand of peanut butter. This recall does mention the states with ill persons: Arizona, California, Connecticut, Illinois, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Texas, Virginia, and Washington.
