In Canada, E. coli Outbreak Linked to XL Foods Beef Grows
The Canadian Public Health Agency has released a statement about the E. coli 0157:H7 outbreak linked to tenderized beef products produced by XL Foods. Beef from that facility has been recalled in massive amounts for the past few weeks. To date, ten cases of E. coli 0157:H7 food poisoning have been linked to the specific strain of the bacteria found during the XL Foods Inc. safety investigation. That is an increase of five cases. Three of the newly confirmed case patients live in Alberta, and the other two live in Quebec. Each of the patients became ill more than two weeks ago and have recovered or are recovering, according to the statement. XL Foods Recalled Beef Distribution List in U.S.
The USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service posted a distribution list for recalled XL Foods beef. We posted a link to the list last week, but feel it's important to detail the specific stores and states where the beef was sold. The beef may be contaminated with E. coli 0157:H7. If you aren't sure if you have purchased any of this beef, ask the store where you bought it. And when in doubt, throw it out. Tenderized steak produced at XL Foods is linked to an E. coli 0157:H7 outbreak that has sickened at least eight people in Canada. The CFIA is warning the public to not consume certain beef products from XL Foods because they may be contaminated with E. coli 0157:H7. This is the 13th time this recall has been expanded. The Canadian recall of beef from XL Foods for E. coli 0157:H7 contamination has been expanded for the twelfth time. The manufacturing dates of the recalled products remains the same: August 24, 27, 28, 29, and September 5, 2012. The government says that the trace out from XL Foods to secondary and tertiary distributors is the cause of the large number of recalls. Food & Water Watch Files Petition to Revoke Canada’s Food Safety Equivalency Status
On September 28, 2012, Food & Water Watch filed a petition with the USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) to revoke Canada's food safety equivalency status. The non-profit charges that the USDA must do more to inspect Canadian meat imports, not less, as is proposed by "Beyond the Border", a new plan between the Obama and Harper Administrations. Regarding the huge and expanding recall of Canadian beef produced by XL Foods for E. coli 0157:H7, Wenonah Hauter, Executive Director of Food & Water Watch said in a statement, "The XL debacle continuing to unfold this week shows why now, more than ever, our food safety trade relationship with Canada needs to be reviewed. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has released a series of questions and answers about the recall of beef products from XL Foods (Est. 38) in Alberta, Canada. The facility has recalled ground beef and beef products after positive test results for E. coli 0157:H7. The recall, which is in Canada alone at this time, has been expanded 11 times in the past 2 weeks. The USDA has not issued a recall, but has issued a public health warning about the beef and has listed the store and states where it was distributed. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has expanded the recall of XL Foods beef products for E. coli 0157:H7 for the 10th time. The products were distributed nationally and are associated with the same XL Foods manufacturing dates of August 24, 27, 28, 29, and September 5, 2012 as the previous recalls.
