Ottawa Salmonella Outbreak Case Count Grows

The outbreak of Salmonella in Ottawa has grown to 23 cases and one more school.

In addition to the four schools listed in the outbreak earlier this week, another school, Stittsville Public School, has been added.

The government hasn’t implicated a specific food, but Jonathan Morris, the owner of “The Lunch Lady”, the catering service possibly associated with the outbreak, is taking responsibility and thinks ground beef is the source of the bacteria.

The other schools involved in the outbreak are:

  • Tiny Hoppers Daycare in Kanata
  • Turnbull School
  • Steve MacLean Public School
  • John Paul II Elementary School

Mr. Morris said, “There were more schools that were served that day so there may be other children that got sick that day that haven’t been part of the list, but may have only been sick for a brief time.”

Three people have been hospitalized, but all have been released.

Local doctors have been alerted to look for more cases, and to culture anyone who may be infected with Salmonella. Symptoms of Salmonellapoisoning include nausea, bloody stools, vomiting, and dehydration. The symptoms usually appear six hours up to 3 days after contaminated food is eaten.
