E. coli 0157:H7 Outbreak in Canada Grows to Eight Patients

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has announced that another person has been sickened in the E. coli 0157:H7 outbreak linked to recalled Gourmet Meat Shoppe frozen beef burgers. The case count is now as follows: Ontario (4), Alberta (2), Manitoba (1), Saskatchewan (1). All of the patients are recovering or have recovered. All of the recalled burgers have been removed from store shelves, but consumers most likely still have some in their home freezers. Public health officials are asking that you check your freezer to see if you have the recalled products. If you do, throw them out or return them to the store. E. coli Outbreak From Frozen Beef Burgers in Canada Grows

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has released more information about the E. coli 015:H7 outbreak in Canada linked to frozen beef burgers. The Gourmet Meat Shoppe and Butcher's Cut burgers were recalled earlier this month. Now seven people have been sickened in this outbreak. More information about the recalled products can be found at the CFIA web site. The case count is as follows: Alberta (2), Ontario (4), and Manitoba (1). One additional case had the same strain of E. coli found in a recalled product, but the case couldn't be definitively linked to the current outbreak. That person died in early December. In Canada, Safeway Frozen Beef Burgers Recalled for E. coli 0157:H7

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) and Canada Safeway Limited are recalling The Gourmet Meat Shoppe and The Butcher's Cut brands of frozen beef burgers because they may be contaminated with E. coli 0157:H7. There is an outbreak of E. coli illnesses that is being investigated by public health officials. The CFIA is conducting a separate E. coli investigation after a different brand of burgers produced by the same company, Cardinal Meat Specialists, was recalled in December 2012. Public health officials are investigating to see if this latest recall of new products can be linked to the older recall. E. coli Recall: Veal Trimmings May be Contaminated

San Jose Valley Veal of California is recalling about 1,260 pounds of veal trimmings that may be contaminated with E. coli 0157:H7. There have been no reports of illness associated with the consumption of this product. The problem was discovered when a customer tested a shipment of the veal and reported "non-negative" results. The recalled product is 60 pound cardboard box cases of "SAN JOSE VALLEY VEAL AND BEEF INC." boneless beef veal trimmings. Canadian E. coli Outbreak Associated with Lettuce Reaches 30 Patients

The Canadian Public Health Agency states that there are now 30 people ill in the E. coli 0157:H7 outbreak associated with shredded lettuce distributed by FreshPoint Inc. The lettuce was sold primarily to KFC and KFC-Taco Bell restaurants and was not distributed to grocery stores. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has traced the lettuce to its origin in California and notified U.S. authorities. Since early January 2013, there has been an investigation into these illnesses. So far, 7 people are sick in New Brunswick, 10 in Nova Scotia, and 13 in Ontario. Glenn’s Market Recalls Ground Beef; E. coli Outbreak in Wisconsin

Glenn's Market and Catering in Watertown Wisconsin is recalling 2,532 pounds of raw ground beef products that may be contaminated with E. coli 0157:H7. The products were sold only at that particular store from the retail meat case. The recalled meat is various size packages of Glenn's Market ground round, ground chuck, and ground beef sold between December 22, 2012 and January 4, 2013. There is a cluster of E. coli 0157:H7 illnesses announced by the Wisconsin Division of Public Health on January 10, 2013. Three patients with the outbreak strain have been identified. The beef was purchased on December 24, 2012 and on December 30, 2012. Illness onset dates ranged from January 29, 2012 to January 1, 2013. Freshpoint Toronto Recalls Burger King, Sysco Salads for E. coli 0157:H7

Freshpoint Toronto is recalling more salads for possible E. coli 0157:H7 contamination. There is an outbreak of E. coli infections in New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Ontario associated with lettuce from California used by FreshPoint. A recall of FreshPoint lettuce was issued on January 12, 2013. At least 26 people are sickened in the outbreak so far. Most of the cases have recovered or are recovering. The reported illnesses occurred in late December 2012 and early January 2013.  The recalled salads are sold under the brand names Sysco, Burger King, PIzza Hut, Yum, and Freshpoint. The products include cut and chopped romaine lettuce, premium chopped romaine hearts, whole iceberg lettuce, chop salad mix, chef salad mix, salad mix harmony, and combo separate salad. In Canada, 26 Cases of E. coli 0157:H7 Associated with KFC and Taco Bell

The Public Health Agency of Canada is investigating an E. coli 0157:H7 outbreak that has now sickened at least 26 people. The outbreak is located in the Maritimes and Ontario and is associated with shredded lettuce produced by Freshpoint Inc. and sold at KFC and KFC-Taco Bell restaurants. The lettuce was not distributed to grocery stores. A recall has been announced. The source of contamination has not been determined. The lettuce originally came from California. U.S. officials have been notified of this outbreak. Public health officials are investigating to see if food safety controls were followed at each step along the production and supply chain. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is announcing a recall of Freshpoint Toronto shredded iceberg lettuce for possible E. coli 0157:H7 contamination. The product was packaged for use by Kentucky Fried Chicken and Taco Bell. There have been illnesses in the Maritimes and Ontario reported associated with this recalled product. For KFC, 3/8" shred Iceberg/Romaine Blend (70/30) is recalled. The lettuce was packaged in 2 pound packages, 6 to a case. The Lot codes are 4941, 5011, 5021, 5031, 5041, 5051, 5121, 5131, 5141, 5151, and 5231, and the UPC number is 10883278082124. For Taco Bell, 1/4" shred iceberg lettuce is recalled.
