Outbreak of E. coli O157:H7 HUS Infections Linked to Romaine Lettuce Grows to 98 Sick

Lawsuits have been filed, as the multistate outbreak of E. coli O157:H7 HUS infection linked to romaine lettuce from the Yuma, Arizona growing region has grown to include 98 sick. Three more states have reported ill persons: Mississippi, Tennessee, and Wisconsin. Forty-six people have been hospitalized in this outbreak. Ten have developed hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), a serious and potentially life-threatening type of kidney failure that can develop as a complication with this type of infection. Fourteen more ill persons have been added to this outbreak since the last update two days ago. Fresh Foods Salads Recalled for Possible E. coli O157:H7

The USDA has issued a recall notice for Fresh Foods Manufacturing salads. The products are being recalled for possible E. coli O157:H7. There is a multistate outbreak of E. coli O157:H7 HUS that is linked to chopped romaine lettuce, but there are no confirmed reports of illness linked directly to these specific products. The company was notified by their romaine supplier that the lettuce used by them was being recalled for E. coli contamination. The ready to eat products were produced from April 9, 2018 to April 12, 2018 and have a shelf life of four days. You can see pictures of the salads at the USDA web site. Interstate Meat Distributors Recall Ground Beef and Pork Products for Possible E. coli O157:H7

Interstate Meat Distributors of Oregon, is recalling about 14,805 pounds of ground beef and pork products that may be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7. No confirmed illnesses have been reported to date in connection with this recall. These products were produced and packaged on February 10 and February 12, 2018. Ground Lean Veal Recalled in Canada for Possible E. coli O157:H7

Vantage Foods in Canada is recalling ground lean veal from the market because it may be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7 bacteria. The meat was sold in Food Basics supermarket locations in Ontario. No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with this problem. The recalled food is Ground Lean Veal in variable size packages. There is no brand name on the product because it was prepared for Food Basics. The UPC number starts with 0 226811, and the code on the meat is Best Before 2017NO04. Haig’s Delicacies Recalls Taboule Salad for E. coli O157:H7

Haig's Delicacies of Hayward, CA is recalling 342 cases of Taboule Salad because it may be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7 bacteria. This product was distributed in California through retail stores. No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with this problem. The Taboule salad was packaged in a 10 ounce plastic tub with UPC number 7-08756-77055-9, as well as a 3-unit multi pack with UPC number 7-08756-37055-1, and a 6-pound bulk foodservice bag with UPC number 7-08756-77077-1. The lot number is 17298 and the products have an expiration date of 11/16/17. Routine testing by the company found the presence of E. coli O157:H7. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency and Vantage Foods are recalling some mechanically tenderized steak for possible E. coli O157:H7 contamination. This type of steak has been injected with needles or blades to break up connective tissue, or has been injected with a marinade or tenderizer. This action can force pathogenic bacteria from the surface of the steak to the interior. No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with this issue. Clair D. Thompson & Sons of Pennsylvania is recalling about 700 pounds of ground beef products that may be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7. No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with this issue. These items were shipped to institutions in New York and Pennsylvania. They were produced and packaged on September 27-28, 2017 and October 2, 2017. The recalled items are 5 pound plastic. bags of "Thompson's Ground Beef," and 10 pound plastic bags of "Thompson's Ground Beef. They have the establishment number "EST. 9681" inside the USDA mark of inspection.
