Raw Scraped Nakaochi Tuna Salmonella Outbreak Final Update

Today the CDC announced that the outbreak of Salmonella Nchanga and Salmonella Bareilly associated with raw scraped tuna imported by Moon Marine USA appears to be over. A total of 425 people in 28 states and the District of Columbia were sickened by the product, which was produced in, and imported from, India. Moon Fishery Pvt. Ltd. in India was the manufacturer of the frozen yellowfin tuna Nakaochi Scrape linked to the outbreak. Several state and federal labs found that the product was contaminated with both of the outbreak strains of Salmonella. A total of 410 people were infected with the outbreak strain of Salmonella Bareilly, and a total of 15 people were infected with the outbreak strain of Salmonella Nchanga. Food Handling Procedures Not Followed in Denver Rescue Mission Outbreak

According to a press release, Denver Rescue Mission said the Lawrence Street Shelter "did not follow our established procedures for handling pre-prepared food donations on Sunday, July 22, which is often receives. We are working closely with officials at Environmental health and Denver Public Health regarding Sunday's incident. We are taking this matter very seriously by thoroughly examining internal procedures for food safety." The shelter is not serving pre-prepared food until health officials complete their investigation into what caused the outbreak. Sixty people were hospitalized in the outbreak. Hannaford Cargill Ground Beef Salmonella Recall Retail List Posted

The USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) has posted the list of retail facilities that stock the recalled Cargill meat Solutions Ground Beef that may be contaminated with Salmonella Enteritidis. These locations may or may not have received the product in question, so make sure that you use the product-specific identification recall information we told you about yesterday. Also check the PDF to find the specific address of the grocery stores on the list. Hannaford Grocery stores in Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, and Vermont are on the recall list. The list also includes Country Market in Oakdale, Connecticut; Brackett's Market in Bath, Maine; Will's Shop N' Save in Dover-Foxcroft, Maine; and Gray Shop N' Save in Gray, Maine. Outbreak at Homeless Shelter in Denver

According to Alexxa Gagner, Director of Public Relations for the Denver Rescue Mission, at least 60 people are hospitalized after eating a turkey dinner at the center last night. According to the press release, the Mission's first priority is the health and safety of each individual. Brad Meuli, President and CEO of the the Mission said, "we are shocked by this situation. Our main concern is for those who have become ill. Nothing like this has ever happened at Denver Rescue Mission and we are taking this matter very seriously. Today, we are working with the health department and local authorities to investigate the cause of the incident." Neff’s Lawn Care Ohio Picnic E. coli 0157 Outbreak Update

The Dayton & Montgomery County Health Department has updated their investigation into the Neff's Lawn Care picnic E. coli 0157:H7 outbreak. As of July 23, 2012, 75 people have been sickened, 14 have been hospitalized, and three people are still hospitalized with hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS). Those three with HUS include a 4-year-old girl, a 14-year-old male, and a 73-year-old male. As many as 300 people attended the picnic which was held on July 3, 2012. Because of cross-contamination after the original outbreak, two secondary cases of E. coli 0157:H7 have been reported. Salmonella Outbreak Linked To Cargill Ground Beef Sold at Hannaford Stores

A Salmonella outbreak linked to Cargill ground beef sold at Hannaford stores has sickened 33 people in seven states and hospitalized least two, according to the latest information from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (USDA, FSIS). Cargill Meat Solutions, in  Wyalusing, Pa., has issued a recall of  29,339 pounds of ground beef  that may be contaminated with Salmonella Enteritidis. FSIS, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and state health departments had been working in cooperation on an ongoing investigation of a multi-state outbreak of Salmonella Enteritidis when the link was extablished. Amazing Coachella Source of E. coli Tainted Romaine Lettuce

The California Department of Public Health has confirmed that several cases of E. coli linked to romaine lettuce was grown and distributed by Amazing Coachella Inc. in Coachella, California. The lettuce sickened at least nine people in California in April 2012, 18 people in New Brunswick Canada, and one person in Quebec. Those cases were matched to the outbreak strain. Most of the victims in California ate at a single restaurant, which public health officials have not named. The lettuce was sold as whole heads, not cut or processed. Since the outbreaks occurred in two different countries, contamination happened at the distributor level and the restaurants were not suspected as the cause of contamination. Update on E. coli 0157 Outbreak in Germantown, Ohio; 68 Now Ill

The Dayton & Montgomery County Health Department has just updated the E. coli 0157:H7 outbreak linked to the Neff's Lawn Care picnic in Germantown. Sixty-eight people are now ill, fourteen have been hospitalized, and three people are suffering from hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS). And 16 people have tested positive for the outbreak strain of the bacteria. The press release states that a 4-year-old girl, a 14-year-old male, and a 73-year-old male have developed HUS; all three are in serious condition. Last week, the 4-year-old girl was listed in critical condition. HUS  is a complication of E. coli 0157:H7 infections, in which shiga toxins, released by the bacteria, destroy red blood cells. Shellfish from Oyster Bay in Nassau County NY Linked to Vibrio Outbreak

The New York Department of Environmental conservation is advising food establishments to avoid using or selling shellfish harvested from areas in the town of Oyster Bay, N.Y. According to the Rhode Island Department of Health, harvesting is no longer allowed in that area because of an illness outbreak caused by Vibrio parahaemolyticus, a naturally occurring marine bacteria. All of the underwater land in Oyster Bay Harbor in an area from the stone house on Plum Point to the northwestern point of Cover Point on Cove Neck are closed for harvest. This include about 1,980 acres on the north shore of Oyster Bay. Three people who ate raw or undercooked shellfish in Nassau County have become ill. Jensen Farms Cantaloupe Listeria Cases Must Be Filed by September 14

Jensen Farms, the company that grew and shipped the cantaloupes that caused the large Listeria outbreak last summer has filed for bankruptcy. The United States Bankruptcy Court in Colorado has approved the motion, and a date has been set for filing of claims. All people who assert a claim based on the outbreak of listeriosis must file it by 5:00 pm Eastern Time on or before September 14, 2012. It's important that anyone who was affected by this outbreak file a claim to receive compensation for their injuries. The court is ordering that Jensen Farms make available $4 million in settlement money, from its insurance policy, insurers of the equipment the facility used, and from the third-party auditor who failed to discover contamination at the plant just before the outbreak … [Read more...]
