Senator Schumer Concerned About Heavy Metals in Baby Food

Senator Chuck Schumer (D-NY) is urging the FDA to investigate a new report that states there are toxic heavy metals in baby foods. The government does not have regulation that would make industry to address this problem. That report, by Healthy Baby Food.org,  states that these metals, including arsenic, lead, mercury, and cadmium, are found in a wide variety of baby foods. According to the report, 95% of baby foods tested were contaminated by at least one of the heavy metals. One in four baby foods teated contains all four of the heavy metals. When consumed, lead can cause serious health problems, including damage to the nervous system and internal organs. Baraka Curry Powder Recalled For Elevated Lead Levels

Baraka curry powder, in both hot and regular varieties, is being recalled for elevated lead levels. Consuming lead over a period of time can cause serious health problems, including developmental delays, learning disabilities, and lower IQ. Short term health problems linked to lead consumption can include abdominal pain, vomiting, irritability, weakness, behavior changes, and seizures. Lead can affect nearly every system in the body, but effects vary depending on the amount consumed, the duration of exposure, and the person's age. Clean Label Project Finds Lead in Many Brands of Protein Powder

The Clean Label Project has studied 134 protein powder products made by 52 different brands. They screened the products for contaminants and toxins, including heavy metals such as lead, pesticides, and others that are linked to cancer. The study, conducted this year, found alarming compounds in many brands of protein powder. The products were tested by a third party analytical chemistry laboratory. The products were animal-based, whey, and plant-based. Then then rated the products with ratings of one, three, or five stars. Pennsylvania School Closed After E. coli Found in Water

A school in Pennsylvania has been closed and the students relocated after E. coli was found in the facility's water. Summit Elementary in Butler County was closed yesterday after an emergency school board meeting. Classes will be relocated to Broad Street Elementary School next week. The problem was identified when testing was performed on the water because school officials knew the water was contaminated with lead. A public notice about the issue states, "due to the lead and copper contamination of the water at the Summit Elementary School the Butler Area School District undercook comprehensive sampling of the well and treated water at the school." Oriental Packing Recalls More Curry Powder for Lead

Oriental Packing Company of Florida is recalling more curry powder products for lead. The company recalled curry powder for lead content earlier this year. No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with the consumption of this product. Lead is a heavy metal and can cause serious and permanent damage to the body. While the FDA has not set a limit on lead in spices, there is a limit of 0.1 ppm in candy. The product was sold in retail stores in Florida and Jamaica. Two Children Sickened After Consuming Life Rising Dietary Supplement

The FDA is investigating incidents associated with Life Rising dietary supplements from Ton Shen Health/Life Rising. The government was informed by the Cook County Department of Health in Chicago, Illinois that two children who may have consumed the product have elevated lead levels. In addition, the FDA is investigating reports of two people who consumed this product who died. It is not clear if the deaths are associated with the product, according to the FDA. Oriental Packing Company is updating their August 14, 2016 recall of curry powder products for lead to include more products. Lead is a toxic heavy metal and can cause serious and sometimes permanent health problems, including lowered IQ and cancer. No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with the consumption of these products. Most of the items listed in the August 14 recall are the same, but some are new.
