CDC Updates Barber Foods Chicken Salmonella Outbreak

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has updated their investigation into the two Salmonella Enteritidis outbreaks in Minnesota and Wisconsin. One of the outbreaks is linked to Barber Foods frozen, raw, chicken products. In one outbreak, six people infected with this pathogenic bacteria are from Minnesota (5) and Wisconsin (1). Two persons have been hospitalized. In the other, three people infected with a different Salmonella strain in Minnesota have been reported. Two of those people have been hospitalized. Illness onset dates range from April 5, 2015 to June 23, 2015. No new illnesses have been reported since July 8, 2015. Which Stores Sold Antioch Farms Chicken Linked to Salmonella Outbreak?

A Salmonella outbreak  linked to Antioch Farms frozen Chicken Cordon Bleu has sickened at least three people in Minnesota and may include illnesses in other states. Although epidemiological evidence has identified the product as the source of the outbreak, the company has not issued a recall. The only information consumers have been given regarding the product is that the packaging is marked with the code P-1358. But information from a recent outbreak linked to another Antioch Farms product may provide some answers. In October 2014, Antioch Farms frozen Chicken Kiev was linked to a Salmonella outbreak that sickened six people in Minnesota. Illnesses, Lawsuits Mount in Boise Co-Op Salmonella Outbreak

Illnesses and lawsuits continue to mount in the Salmonella outbreak linked to deli food at the Boise Co Op. At least 280 people were sickened by food they purchased at the co-op between June 1-10. Several lawsuits have been filed on behalf of those sickened. All of those who became sick with symptoms of Salmonella poisoning including nausea, diarrhea and abdominal cramps ate food from the deli. Some of them said they had eaten sandwiches. Health officials have identified turkey, tomato and onions as contaminated food sources. It’s not clear how the food became contaminated, but cross-contamination may have played a role. Turkey, Tomatoes, Onions Suspect in Boise Co-op Salmonella Outbreak

Turkey, tomatoes, and onions from the deli at the Boise Co-op in Idaho have tested positive for Salmonella, according to several news reports. The Boise Co-op Facebook page states that lab results confirmed Salmonella was found in several foods from the deli. A notice on the Central District Health Department page states that anyone who thinks they have had Salmonella symptoms following the consumption of food purchased at the Boise Co-op deli after June 1, 2015 and has not sought medical attention should call the CDHD. Salmonella Outbreak at Ohio Heritage Corner Health Campus

A Salmonella outbreak has sickened at least eighteen people at the Heritage Corner Health Campus in Bowling Green, Ohio. The Wood County Health District has been investigating the outbreak since June 9, 2015. County officials are collaborating with the Ohio Department of Health, a member of the Outbreak Response and Bioterrorism Investigation Team, and a Food Safety Specialist with the Ohio Department of Health Food Safety Program. Heritage Corner is cooperating with the investigation. Heritage Corner Health Campus offers independent and assisted living to senior citizens. Boise Co-op Associated with Salmonella Outbreak in Idaho

According to the Idaho Central District Health Department, nearly 30 people have been sickened with Salmonella illnesses. There is a "possible link" to the Boise Co-op. But, other cases not associated with that facility have been reported. CDHD is working with the Boise Co-op to find the source of the pathogenic bacteria. Several food samples have been sent to the state public health lab for testing; results are pending. Lab tests have not yet confirmed whether all of those sickened have the same strain of Salmonella. Salmonella in Tuna Sushi Sickens 9 in Arizona

A Salmonella paratyphi outbreak linked to raw tuna sushi has sickened nine people in Arizona, three of whom have been hospitalized, according to the Maricopa County Department of Public Health (MCDPH). Several other states are investigating outbreaks of the same strain including California and New Mexico. Arizona health officials say a rare strain of Salmonella paratyphi in raw minced or ground tuna used to make spicy tuna rolls and other sushi is the likely source. Sushi Salmonella Outbreak in New Mexico Sickens Six

A Salmonella outbreak has sickened six people in New Mexico, according to the New Mexico Department of Health. The agency is working with the City of Albuquerque Environmental Health Department and the New Mexico Environment Department on an investigation of the outbreak the source of which is likely sushi containing raw fish. “People at risk of severe illness associated with Salmonella paratyphi, including the elderly and very young and anyone who is immunocompromised, are urged to not consume any raw seafood product,” said Department of Health Cabinet Secretary Retta Ward, MPH in a statement about the outbreak.  “Anyone with nausea, diarrhea (with or without blood), abdominal cramping and fever, especially after recently eating raw fish, should seek medical attention.  Healthcare … [Read more...]

Windmill Winery AZ Salmonella Outbreak: 38 Sick

The Salmonella outbreak at Windmill Winery in Florence, Arizona has now sickened at least 38 people, according to Pinal County public health officials. The outbreak is linked to two events held at that venue on March 18 and 19, 2015. At least four people have been hospitalized in this outbreak. The catering operation, called Kiss the Chef, Catering, that provided the food was operating illegally, according to authorities. Thomas Schyer, director of the Pinal County Public Health Services District said, "the kitchen was not authorized to be cooked in." In addition, the winery operators had exceeded their legally allowable level of food preparation. Salmonella Outbreak at Windmill Winery in Florence, Arizona

Pinal County has temporarily suspended the food license permit of Windmill Winery in Florence, Arizona after a Salmonella outbreak. The illnesses are linked to a wedding that took place there on March 19, 2015. Some members of the wedding called the county and told them that several people were sickened after the event, and that at least four people were hospitalized. An investigation by the Pinal County Public Health Services District (PCPHSD) found that the operators at Windmill Winery had exceeded their "legally allowable level of food preparation and used a non-permitted caterer."
