Consumers Warned About Jangostor Water Beads For Toxicity

Consumers are being warned about Jangostor Water Beads because they pose a chemical toxicity hazard and are in violation of the Federal Ban of Hazardous Substances, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission. These large beans contain levels of acrylamide that are in violation of the Federal Hazardous Substance Act. If a child eats one of these beans, it can pose a risk of toxicity. The firm, Jangostor, in China, has not agreed to an acceptable recall. CPSC is aware of two incidents in which two-year-old children ingested the beads and needed surgery to remove them. Ingested water beads can grow inside the body and can cause severe discomfort, vomiting, dehydration, intestinal blockages, and life-threatening injuries. CPSC Warns About Hazards of Water Beads

The Consumer Product Safety Commission is warning consumers about the hazards of water beads and young children. Water beads, which are often sold as toys in craft kits, are designed for use as sensory tools for children with developmental disabilities. They are small balls of super absorbing polymers and can grow to 100 times their original size when exposed to water. If children swallow these beads, which can be as small as a pinhead, they can grow inside the body, causing intestinal blockages and life-threatening injuries. Chuckle & Roar Ultimate Water Beads Recalled After Infant Death

Chuckle & Roar Ultimate Water Beads are being recalled after an infant died after ingesting the beads. Another baby required surgery for a bowel obstruction. The product was sold exclusively at Target stores nationwide. The recalling firm is Buffalo Games LLC Of Buffalo, New York. If a water bead is ingested, it expands and can pose a choking hazard, along with intestinal obstructions. Symptoms include severe discomfort, vomiting, dehydration, and risk of death. Buffalo Games has received one report of a 10-month-old child's death from swallowing the water beads in July 2023. The child lived in Wisconsin. Water Beads Recalled in Canada For Life-Threatening Risk

Water Beads are being recalled by Health Canada because they can pose a life-threatening risk. The beads, which are called jelly beads, crystal soil, hydro orbs, orb beads, or sensory beads, are water-absorbing gel beads that can grow up to 1,500 times their size when placed in water. If swallowed, they can grow inside the body and can cause life-threatening injuries such as  intestinal or bowel obstruction. A specific manufacturer was not named in the recall notice.
