After Listeria Illnesses are Reported, Cuajada Fresca and Cuajada Olanchana Recalled

Listeria illnesses have prompted the recall of De Mi Pais brand fresh curd products Cuajada Fresca and Cuajada Olanchana. Customers who have purchased these products should not use them as they risk serious, life-threatening illness if they do.

listeria-fresh-curdcujada-olanchana-listeriaListeria can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, the elderly, the immune  compromised, pregnant women and babies. Among pregnant women, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths. Symptoms, which develop three to 70 days after exposure, include high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea,

The recalled products, made by Global Garlic, Inc. of Miami, were distributed in Florida, Louisiana, Tennessee, and North Carolina from April 1st thought October 14, 2014 to distributors and retail stores. Both products have the same UPC code, 896211002380, on the label of the plastic bag and “Best Used by” dates from 07/01/14 through 12/31/14.

The company has ceased the production and distribution of the product. An investigation by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration is ongoing.
