Chia Powder Salmonella Outbreak Expands, 21 in 12 States Now Sick

The Salmonella outbreak linked to chia powder has expanded to include 21 people in 12 states and a third strain of bacteria, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Two people have been hospitalized.  In Canada, 34 cases of salmonellosis have also been linked to chia powder. Recalls of chia powder products sold under the brand names Navitas, Green Smoothie Girl, Williams Sonoma, Organic Traditions, Back 2 the Garden and Pete's Gluten Free have been issued in the U.S. and Canada. Chia Powder Salmonella Outbreak in Canada Updated

The Public Health Agency of Canada has updated its investigation into the Salmonella outbreak in that country and in the United States linked to sprouted chia seed powder. Now, 34 people in Canada are sick, and 17 people in the U.S. are ill after eating contaminated products. Several products have been recalled in the U.S. and in Canada because they may be contaminated with the pathogenic Salmonella bacteria. Anyone who bought these products should discard them, and should see a doctor immediately if they have symptoms of a Salmonella infection, which include diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, fever, chills, headache, and abdominal pain. Chia Powder Salmonella Outbreak Hits New York, Wisconsin Hardest

A 10-state chia powder Salmonella outbreak has hit New York and Wisconsin hardest, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). At least four people in New York and three in Wisconsin have been diagnosed with salmonellosis after eating the tainted chia powder. The outbreak also includes cases in Canada. Chia powder, which has a nutty flavor, is considered a good source of protein, omega fats, antioxidants and dietary fiber. It can be sprinkled on cereals or salads or mixed into shakes and smoothies. Green Smoothie Girl Recalls Chia Powder for Salmonella

GreenSmoothieGirl is recalling two products which contain organic sprouted chia powder for Salmonella. A 10-state Salmonella outbreak has been linked to chia powder. “To date, there have been no reports of sickness traced back to our products, but we have chosen to exert the utmost level of caution in this situation to protect the health and well-being of our customers. Navitas Naturals Expands Recall of Chia Powder Linked to Salmonella Outbreak

Navitas Naturals has expanded the recall of chia powder that is linked to a Salmonella outbreak that has sickened 17 people in 10 states. The recall now includes products with "best by" dates in November 2015. "Based on investigations by FDA and California Department of Public Health, one of our suppliers Health Matters America Inc. has expanded their recall of Chia products. There is an outbreak associated with chia seed powders that has sickened at least 17 people in the U.S. The recalled products are Organic Traditions Sprouted Chia Seed Powder with lot numbers BIO13SBCS275, BIO13SBCS290, BIO14SBCS290, BIO13SBCS310, BIO13SBCS330, BIO13SBCS353, and BIO13SBCS364 with a net weight of 8 ounces. Salmonella Chia Powder Outbreak Sickens 17 With Two Strains

The Salmonella outbreak linked to contaminated chia powder now includes two strains and has sickened 17 people in the US and another five in Canada, according to the latest update from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Two people have been hospitalized. The strain of Salmonella Hartford, which has been added since the initial announcement of the outbreak a few days ago, has never before been seen in the U.S. Five of the 17 total cases are Salmonella Hartford, the other 12 are Salmonella Newport. A Salmonella outbreak linked to organic, sprouted chia powder distributed by Navitas Naturals of Novato, California has sickened 12 people in seven states, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).  One person has been hospitalized.
