This year, an E. coli O157 outbreak at the Minnesota State Fair has sickened 11 people, hospitalizing six. One person has developed HUS. Most of the patients visited the Miracle of Birth exhibit, and had contact with ruminant animals. Earlier this year, a deadly E. coli outbreak at the San Diego County Fair sickened 10 people. Three people were hospitalized and one 2-year-old died. In 2014, an E. coli O157:H7 outbreak linked to the traveling Zerebko Zoo … [Read more...]

Foodborne Illnesses Increased in 2018 Compared to 2015-2017
Foodborne illnesses increased in 2018 compared to the period of 2015-2017, according to a new report by the Center for Disease Control for its Weekly Morbidity and Mortality Report for the week of April 26, 2019. The report states that this increase may are partially attributable to increased culture-independent diagnostic tests (CIDTs). CIDT identifies pathogens that were not routinely detected by other methods. During 2018, FoodNet identified 25,606 infections, 5,893 hospitalizations, and 120 deaths. The incidence of cyclospora infections increased "markedly," in 2018 because there were several large outbreaks associated with produce. And the number of illnesses caused by Campylobacter and Salmonella remain high. FoodNet surveils the population for lab-diagnosed infections … [Read more...]
Anatomy of an E. coli Outbreak Investigation
With the recent E. coli outbreak linked to romaine lettuce, and the current outbreak of E. coli O103 infections that have sickened dozens in the southern United States, many are wondering how investigators solve these disasters. It's a tribute to public health officials that many outbreaks are solved, and the responsible foods or food safety lapses are identified. Outbreaks that happen at restaurants and gatherings are investigated differently from outbreaks that are linked to specific contaminated foods, such as the Salmonella outbreak in Minnesota linked to unpasteurized cheese, because many more variables are in play. I attended a webinar sponsored by Fight Bac! and the Partnership for Food Safety Education in 2013. Bill Wharton of the Public Health - Dayton & Montgomery … [Read more...]

The two E. coli O157:H7 outbreaks that were linked to romaine lettuce in 2018 were allegedly caused by contaminated agricultural water. In early 2018, 210 people were sickened in an E. coli O157:H7 outbreak linked to romaine lettuce grown in the Yuma, Arizona region of the country. Ninety-six people were hospitalized, and 27 developed hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), which can cause kidney failure. Five people died. This outbreak was the largest of its kind since 2006.
