Eating Raw Meat Causes WI Food Poisoning Outbreak, Again

A Wisconsin E. coli outbreak announced this week was linked to tainted ground beef that sickened three people who ate it raw. A raw meat outbreak? Yes. And it’s not the first time this has happened in Wisconsin. In parts of the Midwest, “Tiger Meat,” a raw ground beef dish similar to steak tartare is popular in some circles, especially those of German heritage. An E. coli outbreak that has sickened three people in Wisconsin has been linked to the consumption of Tiger Meat, a raw ground beef concoction similar to steak tartare that is popular among some Midwesterners, particularly those of German heritage. It's usually served with saltine crackers and paired with beer. Glenn’s Market Recalls Ground Beef; E. coli Outbreak in Wisconsin

Glenn's Market and Catering in Watertown Wisconsin is recalling 2,532 pounds of raw ground beef products that may be contaminated with E. coli 0157:H7. The products were sold only at that particular store from the retail meat case. The recalled meat is various size packages of Glenn's Market ground round, ground chuck, and ground beef sold between December 22, 2012 and January 4, 2013. There is a cluster of E. coli 0157:H7 illnesses announced by the Wisconsin Division of Public Health on January 10, 2013. Three patients with the outbreak strain have been identified. The beef was purchased on December 24, 2012 and on December 30, 2012. Illness onset dates ranged from January 29, 2012 to January 1, 2013. Higa Meat & Pork Market Recalls Ground Beef for Possible E. coli 0157:H7

Higa Meat & Pork Market in Honolulu, Hawaii is recalling about 4,100 pounds of ground beef that may be contaminated with E. coli 0157:H7. The product tested positive for the bacteria and was shipped before the company received test results. There have been no reports of illnesses associated with the consumption of this product. They are recalling 10 pound bags of "HIGA MARKET-GROUND BEEF BULK" with 1 to 6 bags per carton/case. Each case has the establishment number "EST. 12457M" inside the USDA mark of inspection and the identifying case code number "291". Main Street Quality Meats Recalls Ground Beef for Possible E. coli 0157:H7

Main Street Quality Meats of utah is recalling about 2,310 pounds of ground beef that may be contaminated with E. coli 0157:H7. The problem was discovered by the USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS). The product was tested for the deadly bacteria and was shipped before the company received test results. There are no reports of illnesses linked to these products. The recalled products are 10 pound cases of "GROUND BEEF BULK" and 12 pound cases of "GROUND BEEF PATTIES". Each case has the establishment number "EST. 19916" inside the USDA mark of inspection. The cases may also have any of these lot numbers: "1018121," "1019121," "1018122," or "1019122." Food & Water Watch Files Petition to Revoke Canada’s Food Safety Equivalency Status

On September 28, 2012, Food & Water Watch filed a petition with the USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) to revoke Canada's food safety equivalency status. The non-profit charges that the USDA must do more to inspect Canadian meat imports, not less, as is proposed by "Beyond the Border", a new plan between the Obama and Harper Administrations. Regarding the huge and expanding recall of Canadian beef produced by XL Foods for E. coli 0157:H7, Wenonah Hauter, Executive Director of Food & Water Watch said in a statement, "The XL debacle continuing to unfold this week shows why now, more than ever, our food safety trade relationship with Canada needs to be reviewed. Canada Expands XL Foods E. coli 0157:H7 Beef Recall for Eighth Time

The recall for labeled and unlabeled ground beef products produced by XL foods has expanded in Canada for an eighth time for possible E. coli 0157:H7 contamination. It includes labeled, unlabeled, branded, and unbranded ground beef products available for sale from August 24 to September 25, 2012 and is sold at stores that may not be identified. If you are not sure if you have the affected products, check with the store or throw it out. More brands included in the recall are Reddi Food Solutions Inc. and Freson Brothers. Ground sirloin and Extra Lean Ground Beef are the recalled products. USDA Extends Beef Products Warning to Kroger, Fred Meyer, Safeway, Walmart

The USDA has extended its warning about beef imported from XL Foods for E. coli 0157:H7 to include 30 states and several major grocery store chains. Now Kroger, Safeway, and WalMart, among others, are listed as facilities that carried the products. The USDA's FSIS has released another list of retail consignees that received the products. All beef and beef products produced on August 24, 27, 28, 29, and September 5, 2012 have been recalled by XL Foods. The beef was sold in these stores in the United States: Albertson's, Baker's, City Market, Dillon's, Food4Less, Foods Co., Fred Meyer, Fry's, Gerbes, Haggan Northwest Fresh, Hilander, Jay C, King Soopers, Kroger, Owen's Pay Less, QFC, Ralph's, Safeway, Sam's Club, Scott's Smith's Stores, TOP Food and Drug, and Walmart. FSIS Expands Public Health Alert for E. coli in XL Foods Canadian Beef

The USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) is expanding the Public Health Alert for XL Foods to include all beef and beef products produced on August 24, 27, 28, 29, and September 5, 2012. The products are considered adulterated with E. coli 0157:H7 and should be returned to the place of purchase or destroyed. The foods subject to recall include, but are not limited to, steaks, roasts, mechanically tenderized steaks and roasts, and ground beef. You can find the retail distribution list at the FSIS site. Canada Suspends XL Foods License to Operate After E. coli Beef Recalls

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has suspended XL Foods Inc. license to operate after the company did not adequately implement corrective actions after inspection. The facility's ground beef and beef trim was recalled after it was found to be contaminated with E. coli 0157:H7. The recall has been expanded seven times and spread into the United States. The recall began September 17, 2012. On September 4, 2012, the USDA notified the CFIA of a positive E. coli 0157:H7 sample in beef trimmings from XL Foods. The CFIA found the deadly bacteria in products made in XL Foods Alberta facility that same day. So the Canadian government conducted enhanced inspections at that plant.
