The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is reporting that there are illness outbreaks on two Christmas cruises in the Caribbean. One outbreak is on the Cunard Line Queen Mary 2, with voyage dates of December 22, 2012 to January 3, 2013. The second is the Princess Cruises Emerald Princess, with voyage dates of December 17 to December 27, 2012. The cause of the outbreaks has not been determined, but it may be norovirus, which often strikes enclosed areas such as cruise ships and nursing homes. A suspected norovirus outbreak has been declared at the Stateville Correctional Facility in Illinois. Illinois Department of Corrections spokesperson Melaney Arnold told Food Poisoning Bulletin that approximately 144 inmates reported becoming ill after Christmas. No patients have been hospitalized. Food testing is underway to try to determine the source of the outbreak. Golden Corral Restaurant in Casper Wyoming Closes to Clean
According to the Casper-Natrona County Health Department, the Golden Corral restaurant closed voluntarily for 24 hours to "thoroughly clean and disinfect" the facility. Corporate management proposed the closing to "help break the transmission chain". The health department states that almost 200 people have reported becoming ill after eating at the restaurant in Casper, Wyoming. About 90 people have been sickened with norovirus after attending a private meeting at the Oregon Zoo last week. The meeting of Women's HealthCare Associates was attended by more than 200 people. Oregon Live reports that norovirus is "the most likely culprit." Mankato Norovirus Outbreak Linked to Sick Najwa’s Catering Employee
According to the Mankato Free Press, an ill food service worker or workers was the source of a norovirus outbreak at the Greater Mankato Growth banquet that sickened 30 to 40 people at the Mankato Civic Center on November 13, 2012. The food service provider, Najwa's Catering, was the source of the outbreak. Public health officials were not able to trace the norovirus source to one particular person. The Peoria City/County Health Department is investigating a norovirus outbreak at Alexander's Steakhouse in Peoria, the Peoria Journal Star reports. Thirty-nine of eighty people who attended a banquet for a high school soccer team were sickened. The dinner was held on November 4, 2012.
