This last spring and summer, there was a large outbreak of Salmonella Bareilly linked to raw scraped tuna called Nakaochi Scrape imported by Moon Marine USA Corporation. The product was used in sushi sold at restaurants and grocery stores across the country. On April 4, 2012, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced the outbreak, with 93 people sickened in 19 states and the District of Columbia. Two days later, the outbreak grew to include 100 people. The age range was from 4 to 78 years, with 47% of the patients being female, and 10 people hospitalized. FDA Warning Letter to Moon Fishery
On April 19, 2012 through April 24, 2012 the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) inspected Moon Fishery in India, the facility that produced the recalled Nakaochi Scrape raw tuna linked to the large Salmonella Bareilly and Salmonella Nchanga outbreak in the U.S. The same company issued a recall of raw Grade AA and AAA tuna strips, intended for sushi, last week. As a result of that inspection, the FDA issued a warning letter to the company detailing the violations of the Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) plan that every food facility is required to develop and follow. Moon Fishery of India Recalls Raw Tuna Strips for Possible Salmonella Contamination
Moon Fishery Pvt. Ltd of India, the company that manufactured the yellow fin tuna Nakaochi Scrape that was recalled in the United States and sickened at least 258 people in 24 states and the District of Columbia, is recalling 22 pound cases of "Tuna Strips" because they may also be contaminated with Salmonella. The specific serotype of the bacteria was not specified. Salmonella bacteria can cause serious and sometimes fatal illnesses in the very young, the elderly, the chronically ill, and those with compromised immune systems. Even healthy people can suffer long term effects of food poisoning, including reactive arthritis and myocarditis. The FDA sampled some of the product from a lot that was not yet in commerce. A resident of Malden, Massachusetts is fighting a severe Salmonella Bareilly infection as a result of eating a spicy tuna roll that was part of the nationwide outbreak linked to raw tuna scrape imported by Moon Marine USA Corporation. A lawsuit has been filed on that patient's behalf by Pritzker Hageman Salmonella lawyers in United States District Court, District of Massachusetts, Boston Division (case number 1:12-cv-10819-RGS) against Moon Marine USA. More than 258 people have been sickened in this outbreak by two bacteria, Salmonella Bareilly and Salmonella Nchanga. The CDC has updated the Salmonella Bareilly and Salmonella Nchanga outbreak linked to raw scraped ground tuna imported by Moon Marine USA Corporation. New states now included in the outbreak include California, Nebraska, and Tennessee. As of May 2, 2012, 258 people are sick in 24 states and the District of Columbia. Salmonella Bareilly infections total 247 persons, and Salmonella Nchanga infections have sickened 11 people. Thirty two people have been hospitalized; no deaths are reported. DNA Fingerprinting and the Tuna Sushi Salmonella Outbreak
The tuna sushi Salmonella outbreak now includes 200 people from 21 states and the District of Columbia, to find out how those illnesses were related, scientists used DNA fingerprinting.
