Raw Tuna Scrape Salmonella Bareilly Outbreak Lawsuit Recap

This last spring and summer, there was a large outbreak of Salmonella Bareilly linked to raw scraped tuna called Nakaochi Scrape imported by Moon Marine USA Corporation. The product was used in sushi sold at restaurants and grocery stores across the country. On April 4, 2012, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced the outbreak, with 93 people sickened in 19 states and the District of Columbia. Two days later, the outbreak grew to include 100 people. The age range was from 4 to 78 years, with 47% of the patients being female, and 10 people hospitalized. The outbreak continued to grow rapidly. Raw Scraped Nakaochi Tuna Salmonella Outbreak Final Update

Today the CDC announced that the outbreak of Salmonella Nchanga and Salmonella Bareilly associated with raw scraped tuna imported by Moon Marine USA appears to be over. A total of 425 people in 28 states and the District of Columbia were sickened by the product, which was produced in, and imported from, India. Moon Fishery Pvt. Ltd. in India was the manufacturer of the frozen yellowfin tuna Nakaochi Scrape linked to the outbreak. Several state and federal labs found that the product was contaminated with both of the outbreak strains of Salmonella. A total of 410 people were infected with the outbreak strain of Salmonella Bareilly, and a total of 15 people were infected with the outbreak strain of Salmonella Nchanga. Raw Scraped Tuna Salmonella Outbreak Grows Again; 390 Now Ill

According to the CDC, the Salmonella Bareilly and Salmonella Nchanga outbreak linked to raw scraped tuna has grown again. Now 390 people in 27 states and the District of Columbia have been sickened by the contaminated product; that's an increase of 74 new cases from the last update in May. Kansas is now part of the outbreak. Forty-seven people have been hospitalized in this outbreak. A raw tuna product called Nakaochi Scrape imported by Moon Marine USA Corporation was recalled as the source of this outbreak. Lab tests conducted by public health laboratories in Connecticut, Maryland, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, and Wisconsin have isolated the outbreak strains of Salmonella from 95% of the samples taken from intact packages of that product. Raw Tuna Salmonella Bareilly and Nchanga Outbreak Updated: 316 Sickened

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) just updated the multistate outbreak of Salmonella Bareilly (304 people) and Salmonella Nchanga (12 people) infections linked to a raw scraped tuna product imported by Moon Marine USA Corporation. That product, called Nakaochi scrape, was used to make sushi such as spicy tuna rolls sold at restaurants and grocery stores around the country. The tuna was produced at Moon Fishery in India, a facility that was recently inspected and found in violation of safety laws by the FDA. Moon Fishery recently recalled raw tuna strips for possible Salmonella contamination. FDA Warning Letter to Moon Fishery

On April 19, 2012 through April 24, 2012 the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) inspected Moon Fishery in India, the facility that produced the recalled Nakaochi Scrape raw tuna linked to the large Salmonella Bareilly and Salmonella Nchanga outbreak in the U.S. The same company issued a recall of raw Grade AA and AAA tuna strips, intended for sushi, last week. As a result of that inspection, the FDA issued a warning letter to the company detailing the violations of the Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) plan that every food facility is required to develop and follow. Parts of the letter were redacted. Moon Fishery of India Recalls Raw Tuna Strips for Possible Salmonella Contamination

Moon Fishery Pvt. Ltd of India, the company that manufactured the yellow fin tuna Nakaochi Scrape that was recalled in the United States and sickened at least 258 people in 24 states and the District of Columbia, is recalling 22 pound cases of "Tuna Strips" because they may also be contaminated with Salmonella. The specific serotype of the bacteria was not specified. Salmonella bacteria can cause serious and sometimes fatal illnesses in the very young, the elderly, the chronically ill, and those with compromised immune systems. Even healthy people can suffer long term effects of food poisoning, including reactive arthritis and myocarditis. The FDA sampled some of the product from a lot that was not yet in commerce. Tuna Salmonella Lawsuit Filed in Boston, MA by National Food Safety Law Firm

A resident of Malden, Massachusetts is fighting a severe Salmonella Bareilly infection as a result of eating a spicy tuna roll that was part of the nationwide outbreak linked to raw tuna scrape imported by Moon Marine USA Corporation. A lawsuit has been filed on that patient's behalf by Pritzker Hageman Salmonella lawyers in United States District Court, District of Massachusetts, Boston Division (case number 1:12-cv-10819-RGS) against Moon Marine USA. More than 258 people have been sickened in this outbreak by two bacteria, Salmonella Bareilly and Salmonella Nchanga. Salmonella Bareilly and Nchanga Raw Tuna Outbreak Updated

The CDC has updated the Salmonella Bareilly and Salmonella Nchanga outbreak linked to raw scraped ground tuna imported by Moon Marine USA Corporation.  New states now included in the outbreak include California, Nebraska, and Tennessee. As of May 2, 2012, 258 people are sick in 24 states and the District of Columbia. Salmonella Bareilly infections total 247 persons, and Salmonella Nchanga infections have sickened 11 people. Thirty two people have been hospitalized; no deaths are reported. DNA Fingerprinting and the Tuna Sushi Salmonella Outbreak

The tuna sushi Salmonella outbreak now includes 200 people from 21 states and the District of Columbia, to find out how those illnesses were related, scientists used DNA fingerprinting. Since 1996, PulseNet, a nationwide network of 87 laboratories, has worked together to identify and unravel foodborne illness outbreaks by posting the DNA fingerprints of pathogens that have caused confirmed cases of illness on a shared database. “PulseNet has been a tremendously valuable tool for detecting outbreaks over the years,” said David Warshauer, deputy director of communicable disease at the Wisconsin State Laboratory of Hygiene, the lab that established the link between the tainted tuna and the outbreak patients. “For example, in this case we saw a cluster of Salmonella Bareilly and a … [Read more...]

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has just released an update into the Salmonella outbreak linked to raw scraped tuna imported by Moon Marine USA Corporation. At least 200 people in 21 states and the District of Columbia are now sick, and 28 people have been hospitalized. The state of Vermont is now included in the outbreak.
