FDA Updates ALDI Jewel Osco Hy Vee Bagged Salad Cyclospora Outbreak

The FDA has updated the ALDI Jewel Osco Hy Vee bagged salad cyclospora outbreak that has sickened at least 76 people in 6 midwest states. Hy-Vee has posted a recall of some of its garden salads on the FDA web site. ALDI and Jewel Osco have also listed recalls, but on their corporate sites only. The most significant changes to report are that the number of states where these products were probably sold has increased, along with details about the recalled salads. The recalled salads are potentially linked to the multistate Cyclospora outbreak by the FDA. The "garden salads" in question contain iceberg lettuce, red cabbage, and carrots. Cyclospora Sickens Thirteen Minnesotans From ALDI HyVee Bagged Salads

Cyclospora sickens thirteen Minnesotans after they allegedly ate bagged salads sold at ALDI and HyVee stores in that state. These patients are part of a large multistate cyclosporiasis outbreak that started in May 2020 and has sickened dozens in 7 states. The Minnesota Department of Health is working with the Minnesota Department of Agriculture and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the FDA, and other state's public health agencies to investigate this outbreak. The salads sold in Minnesota that are believed to be contaminated are ALDI and Hy-Vee store brand "garden salads" that contain iceberg lettuce, red cabbage, and carrots. The FDA is weighing in on the multistate ALDI HyVee salads cyclospora outbreak. At least 76 people in 6 states are sick with this intestinal parasite. The ingredients in those bagged salads include iceberg lettuce, red cabbage, and carrots. The notice states that "This applies only to the store brand salads labeled as 'garden salads' and not for other types of store brand packaged salads sold at these retailers." A bagged salad cyclospora outbreak has sickened 76 people in 6 states, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The salads include ALDI Little Salad Bar Brand Garden Salad, Hy-Vee Brand Garden Salad, and Jewel-Osco Signature Farms Garden Salad. Investigators are trying to determine if other products may also be a source of these illnesses. The patient case count by state is: Iowa (28), Illinois (23), Kansas (1), Minnesota (10), Missouri (7), and Nebraska (7). Sixteen people have been hospitalized because they are so sick. The basil cyclospora outbreak linked to Siga Logistics de RL de VC imported from Mexico is number four in the top 10 list of multistate outbreaks for 2019.  At least 241 people were sickened across the United States in this one outbreak. FDA's traceback confirms that the fresh basil available were some consumers got sick was exported by Siga Logistics. The basil was recalled on July 24, 2019. The basil cyclospora outbreak has ended after sickening 241 people and hospitalizing 6 across the United States, according to the FDA. The last illness onset date was July 26, 2019. The outbreak was linked to fresh basil exported by Siga Logistics de RL de CV located in Morelos, Mexico. The FDA has completed its investigational activities, according to an October 11, 2019 update. FDA's traceback investigation confirmed that the fresh basil available at points of sale where some consumers became ill was that exported by Siga Logistics. The basil was recalled on July 24, 2019. The firm has been cooperative with the investigation. Consumers no longer need to avoid fresh basil from Siga Logistics. The basil cyclospora outbreak has ended, according to the FDA, with 241 sick in 11 states. Exposures occurred in five states: Minnesota, Florida, New York, Ohio, and Wisconsin. Six people were hospitalized because they were so sick. A recall was issued for basil imported from Mexico. Cyclospora Has Sickened 1696 People As Of August 28, 2019 in the U.S.

Domestically acquired cases of cyclospora have sickened 1,696 people in 33 states, the District of Columbia, and New York City as of August 28, 2019, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Some of these illnesses are linked to fresh imported basil and some restaurants and events throughout the country. But many of the individual cases could not be linked to a specific outbreak, in part because of the lack of validated molecular typing tools for the Cyclospora parasite. The FDA has updated the basil cyclospora outbreak that has now sickened at least 205 people in 11 states. That's an increase of 73 patients since the last update which was posted on July 25, 2019. Five people have been hospitalized because they are so sick. The basil in question is imported from Mexico by Siga Logistics de RL de CV from Morelos. That facility recalled basil on July 24, 2019. Consumers should not buy, eat, or serve any fresh basil imported by Siga Logistics. Do not eat or serve uncooked items such as pesto or salad that may include basil imported from Mexico, unless you are absolutely certain it was not imported by Siga Logistics. Cyclospora Outbreak Associated With Workplace Cafeterias in Central Virginia

A cyclospora outbreak that is associated with three workplace cafeterias has sickened people in central Virginia, according to a news release by the Virginia Department of Health. A food or water source of these cyclosporiasis outbreaks has not been identified by public health officials. The press release states that workplace cafeterias in the following locations are part of the online investigation: Capital One Building at 1600 Capital One Drive in McLean, Virginia; Valo Park Building at 7950 Jones Branch Drive in McLean, Virginia; and CarMax at 12800 Tuckahoe Creek Parkway in Richmond, Virginia.
