Fresh Express is recalling salads for possible cyclospora contamination. These products are potentially linked to a multistate cyclospora outbreak that has sickened more than 200 people in eight states. Fresh Express is working with the FDA in an investigation into this contamination and outbreak. There are more than 90 different types and sizes of recalled salads on the list at the FDA web page. The brand names involved that we know of now include ALDI, Hy Vee, Jewel Osco, Walmart, Giant Eagle, and ShopRite, along with Fresh Express. Fresh Express is recalling some of its Walmart Marketside Iceberg Salads because it may be contaminated with the cyclospora parasite. A cyclospora outbreak linked to bagged salads has sickened at least 206 people in 8 states in the midwest. Fresh Express has been named by the FDA as the manufacturer of salads potentially linked to that outbreak. The recall is for all product codes of Marketside Classic Iceberg Salad that is sold in 12 and 24 ounce size packages. The best if used by dates on the packages are May 19, 2020 to July 4, 2020. A new product has been added to the list of salads in the outbreak: Walmart's Marketside Classic Iceberg Salad sold in 12 and 24 ounce sizes. The FDA has named Fresh Express as the producer of these salads. And there are now 206 people in 8 states sick in this outbreak. North Dakota has been added to the outbreak list. The case count by state is: Iowa (74), Illinois (57), Kansas (1), Minnesota (25), Missouri (10), Nebraska (20), North Dakota (6), and Wisconsin (13). These outbreaks are always linked to fresh produce that does not go through a kill step such as heating before consumers eat it. Let's look back at the recent cyclospora outbreaks in the U.S. First, Cyclospora cayetanensis is a microscopic parasite that uses a human host to reproduce and travel. When a person ingests a major oocyst, it breaks apart in the intestine, causes damage, and uses human cells to reproduce. It is excreted in feces, where it matures in the environment, contaminates food through waste in the fields, contamination along the food chain, or contaminated irrigation water, and the process repeats. The first known cyclospora outbreak of the 2020 season in the U.S. linked to ALDI, Hy-Vee, and Jewel-Osco salads has sickened at least 122 people in 7 states, as of June 23, 2020. Nineteen people have been hospitalized. Where were those bagged salads linked to cyclospora illnesses sold? Are people in other states at risk? While there are illness in just seven of the twelve states where the salads were sold, people living in the states without an outbreak still need to discard those products and should monitor their health for the symptoms of cyclosporiasis if they ate them. The Illinois cyclospora outbreak that is linked to ALDI, Hy Vee, and Jewel Osco garden salads produced by Fresh Express has sickened at least 30 people in that state, according to the Illinois Department of Public Health. The last update by that department was on June 20, 2020 and stated 23 illnesses, but the FDA and CDC have updated the case counts since then.
