FDA Recalls and Destroys Kratom Products; Kratom is Associated with a Multistate Salmonella Outbreak

The FDA has said it has recalled and destroyed products made with kratom, and warns consumers that the substance can be hazardous. The supplements it has collected and destroyed were distributed nationwide under the brand names Botany Bay, Enhance Your Life, and Divinity by Divinity Products Distribution of Grain Valley, Missouri. The company has agreed to stop selling all products containing kratom.   The FDA is also encouraging all companies that sell products containing kratom to take steps to remove their products from the market and submit evidence to the FDA to evaluate them according to the regulatory pathway. Multistate Salmonella Outbreak Linked to Kratom Sickens at Least 28 People

The FDA has been warning consumers about kratom, an ingredient used in some dietary supplements, for months. There have been reports of serious adverse events, including 36 deaths, that are associated with the use of products containing kratom. Now, the CDC has announced a multistate Salmonella I 4,[5],12:b:- outbreak that is linked to kratom. At least twenty-eight people in 20 states have been sickened in this outbreak, as of February 16, 2018. And eleven people have been hospitalized because their illnesses are so severe. FDA Releases Information About Opioid Compounds in Kratom

The FDA released information about adverse events and scientific analysis providing evidence of opioid properties in kratom, an ingredient used in some dietary supplements. Food Poisoning Bulletin told you about a warning the FDA issued last November about this ingredient, stating that the substance is addictive and has been linked to deaths in this country. U.S. Marshals Seize Dietary Supplements Made with Kratom

The FDA has announced that U.S. Marshals, at the agency's request, seized almost 90,000 bottles of dietary supplements that contain kratom, a botanical substance that poses a risk to public health. This plant, whose Latin name is Mitragyna speciosa, grows in Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Papua New Guinea. It is toxic to multiple organ systems. Consumption of kratom can lead to respiratory depression, vomiting, nervousness, weight loss, and constipation. It has narcotic and stimulant effects and causes withdrawal symptoms, including hostility, aggression, excessive tearing, aching of muscles and bones and jerky limb movements. U.S. Marshals Seize $5 Million of Raw Kratom

U.S. Marshals have seized more than 25,000 pounds of raw kratom material worth more than $5 million from Rosefield Management, Inc. in Van Nuys, California.  Kratom is a botanical substance native to Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia and Papua New Guinea.  It is not approved in the U.S. for any medical use but is marketed for its opioid-like analgesic effects and in the treatment of morphine and heroin addiction.
