Before Listeria Outbreak, CRF Uncooperative with FDA, Documents Show

Updated June 15 Before being linked to a multistate Listeria outbreak that includes eight illnesses and two deaths, CRF Frozen Foods was reluctant to cooperate with inspectors from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and was advised of legal sanctions available to the agency if the firm did not correct serious deficiencies. Documents about this investigation were released this week by the FDA. On April 23, 2016, CRF Frozen Foods issued a recall of 11 frozen vegetables for possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination. On May 2, 2016, CRF expanded the recall to include all of the organic and traditional frozen vegetable and fruit products processed in its Pasco, Washington facility since May 1, 2014. Listeria Recall for Sunflower Seeds, Snack Mixes Sold at Sporting Goods Stores

Rucker’s Wholesale and Service Co of Bridgeport, IL has issued a recall for sunflower seeds and snack mixes sold under a variety of bran names at sporting goods stores and other retailers. The recall was triggered by the company's sunflower seed provider, SunOpta. Sunflower Kernels, Sweet & Salty Mix, and Cajun Hot Mix were sold at Bass Pro Shops, Cabela's, Family Choice, Jay's Sporting Goods and other stores. Two Listeria Illnesses may be linked to Recalled Sunflower Seed Products

At least two illnesses have been linked to recalled sunflower seed products, according a recall by First Source of Tonawanda, NY. The First Source recall expansion was triggered by a Listeria recall from its sunflower seed supplier, SunOpta which has not posted information about illnesses on its website. The recalled sunflower seeds and snack mix products were sold under a variety of brand names including Alpine Valley, Earth Fare, Flave, Gonzo, Foodhols, SSP, Stewarts, Tops and Wegmans. They were sold between June 4, 2015 and May 31, 2016 at retail stores in the following states:  IN, LA, MA, MD, MI, NJ, NY, OH, PA, VA, WV & SC. Weekly Food Recall Roundup: June 5, 2016

This week's food recalls included a General Mills recall of 10 million pounds of flour for E. coli that was triggered by a 20-state E. coli outbreak; the expansion of SunOpta's sunflower seed recall for Listeria which triggered a number of secondary recalls and a number of recalls for foods with undeclared allergens. Food Recalls in the U.S. Pathogens The Meadow Gold Dairy plant in Boise is recalling Meadow Gold brand Old Style Whipping Cream and Meadow Gold Dairy Pure brand Whipping Cream and Half and Half due to insufficient pasteurization. MaraNatha Sunflower Butter Listeria Recall

MaraNatha All Natural Sunflower Seed Butter is being recalled for possible Listeria contamination. Consumers who have purchased this product should not eat it as Listeria can cause serious illness. The recall was prompted by the expansion of a recall by the company's sunflower seed supplier SunOpta. At the time of the recall, no illnesses had been reported. Clif Bar Recall for Potential Listeria Contamination

Clif Bar & Company of Emeryville, CA. has issued a recall of CLIF BAR Nuts & Seeds energy bars, CLIF BAR Sierra Trail Mix energy bars, and CLIF Mojo Mountain Mix trail mix bars,  after its ingredient supplier, SunOpta recalled  sunflower kernels that may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. SunOpta is expanding its recall of sunflower kernel products due to potential contamination with Listeria. The expansion covers products originating from SunOpta’s facility in Crookston, Minn. between May 31, 2015 and January 31, 2016. At the time of the recall expansion, no illnesses had been reported in connection with the sunflower kernels.
