FDA Approves Palforzia For Treatment of Children’s Peanut Allergies

The FDA has approved the use of a new drug called Palforzia to mitigate peanut allergic reactions in children.  This is the first time a drug has been approved to treat this deadly type of food allergy, which can put a person into anaphylactic shock. The product is called Palforzia [Peanut (Arachis hypogaea) Allergen Powder-dnfp]. The treatment can be started in children ages 4 through 17 who have a confirmed diagnosis of. peanut allergy. Those who take Palforzia must still avoid peanut in their diets. Cookie Dough Cafe Recalls Chocolate Chip Bars For Undeclared Peanuts

Juju Bakes, LLC, doing business as The Cookie Dough Cafe of Bloomington, Illinois is recalling 15 cases of Chocolate Chip Chilled Gourmet Edible Cookie Dough Bars because they may contain peanuts, one of the major food allergens. Anyone who is allergic to peanuts could have a life-threatening allergic reaction if they eat this product. No reactions have been reported to the company to date in connection with this recall. New Advice for Parents of Children at Risk for Peanut Allergies

A new qualified health claim from the government advises that some parents of babies who are at risk for developing a peanut allergy could introduce them to peanut butter at a young age. This seemingly contradictory advice comes after a clinical trail at the National Institutes of Health found this practice reduces the number of people who develop this serious allergy. Peanut allergy is one of the most common food allergies, and is one of the most dangerous. Reactions to peanuts is the leading cause of death related to food-induced anaphylaxis in this country. NIH Issues Guidelines to Prevent Peanut Allergies

Many of the pieces we write have to do with products recalled for undeclared allergens. One of the most serious allergens is the peanut. Some people are so allergic to peanuts that a very tiny amount can produce anaphylactic shock or death. Peanut Corporation of America Executives Indicted

On February 21, 2013, the U.S. Department of Justice indicted four former executives of the defunct Peanut Corporation of America on 76 counts. That corporation's peanut butter was responsible for a nationwide Salmonella outbreak in 2009 that sickened more than 700 people and killed nine. Stewart Parnell, owner and President, Michael Parnell, a food broker, and Samuel Lightsey, Blakeley operations manager, were charged with mail and wire fraud, the introduction of adulterated and misbranded food into interstate commerce with intent to defraud or mislead, and conspiracy. In addition, Stewart Parnell, Lightsey, and Mary Wilkerson, office and quality assurance manager, were charged with obstruction of justice. Boulder Ice Cream Recall Due To Sunland Peanuts

Boulder Ice Cream has  announced a voluntary recall of certain ice cream and gelato products manufactured using peanut ingredients recalled by Sunland Inc. for potential Salmonella contamination.  The company was notified by their manufacturer Fresca Foods, Inc. located in Louisville, CO that Sunland peanuts were and may have been used in the production of certain peanut butter products in the past. The products were distributed nationwide to  large supermarket chains; the larger format container products were distributed to food service. The UPC is located on the side and the "Best By" date is imprinted on the bottom of each 16 oz consumer pint container and on the sides of food service containers. Bumble Bar Recalls Bars Made with Sunland Peanuts

Bumble Bar is recalling some lots of their Gluten Free Café™ Chocolate Sesame Bars and Gluten Free Café™ Cinnamon Sesame Bars because they were made with Sunland peanuts. Those nuts have been recalled for possible Salmonella contamination. Sunland made Trader Joe's Valencia peanut butter is linked to a Salmonella Bredeney outbreak that has sickened 38 people in the United States, most of them children. Four companies are recalling peanut products relating to the Sunland recall for possible Salmonella contamination. The derivative recalls will expand now that Sunland has recalled whole roasted and raw peanuts. No illnesses have been reported in relation to these recalled products. JagRma LLC is recalling NuttZo Original 16 ounce Nut and Seed butter  because it was made with Sunland peanuts.
