A Salmonella paratyphi outbreak associated with raw tuna or salmon was announced at a Clark County health board meeting in Washington state. During that meeting, on October 26, 2017, Madison Riethman, an applied epidemiology fellow at that department, said that illnesses in at least 30 people in 7 states have been confirmed. The information was presented in a slide show. On August 29, 2017, five cases of Salmonella were reported to Clark County Public Health's Communicable Disease team. Three of five cases were interviewed that week, but no common exposures were found. A Salmonella outbreak linked to frozen, raw tuna used for sushi and other dishes made its way through 11 states last summer, sickening 65 people and hospitalizing 11, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Health officials linked the outbreak to frozen, yellowfin tuna produced by Osamu Corporation at a processing plant in Indonesia. The company issued two recalls. One on July 20, 2015, the other on July 21, 2015. Most of those who became ill reported eating sushi made with raw tuna in the week prior. Osamu Corporation is recalling all of its frozen tuna sourced from one processing plant in Indonesia that is linked to a Salmonella outbreak in Minnesota. The Minnesota Department of Health investigators found the outbreak strain of Salmonella in unopened packages of the product. The recalled tuna includes loin, saku, chunk, slice, and ground market forms. This tuna was sold in bulk packaging to distributors who then sold it to sushi restaurants and grocery stores that made packaged sushi rolls for customers to purchase and take home. The Minnesota Department of Health has announced that two Minnesota residents sickened with salmonellosis are linked to frozen raw tuna. They are part of a larger national outbreak that was linked to spicy tuna rolls purchased at a grocery store and workplace cafeteria. The outbreak strain of Salmonella was found in sealed bags of frozen raw tuna from the lot used to make the spicy tuna rolls eaten by one of the patients. This tuna was packaged in frozen, vacuum-sealed bags without a brand name. The labels identify the product: lot number 68568 and Indonesia as the country of origin. California Salmonella Outbreak Associated with Raw Sushi
A Salmonella outbreak in southern California has sickened at least 25 people. Eighteen cases are confirmed, and seven others are suspected. Five people have been hospitalized in this outbreak. Officials believe the outbreak may be linked to raw tuna in sushi. Ventura County Health Department released information to the media late Monday night. A Salmonella outbreak linked to raw, scraped tuna was that largest multi-state food poisoning outbreak of 2012, based on the total number of people sickened. The outbreak, which was announced in April, sickened 425 people in 28 states and the District of Columbia. Produced in India and distributed in the US by Moon Marine USA Corporation, the raw, yellowfin tuna product, known as Nakaochi Scrape, is tuna backmeat that is scraped from the bones of tuna.
