The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have updated their investigation into the Salmonella outbreak inked to organic sprouted chia powder. Now 25 people in 15 states have been sickened. Three people have been hospitalized; no deaths are reported. There are three separate strains of Salmonella bacteria in this particular outbreak. As of July 14, 2014, a total of 25 ill persons infected with the outbreak strains of Salmonella Newport (16 persons), Salmonella Hartford (7 persons), or Salmonella Oranienburg (2 persons) have been reported from 15 states. Fourteen Sickened in AL El Patron Salmonella Outbreak
The Alabama Department of Public Health has issued a news release stating that 14 people have been sickened with Salmonella in Russellville. The outbreak is centered around the El Patron restaurant on Highway 43 in that city. That restaurant is still closed as of June 20, 2014 after inspection by city public health officials. Those who are part of this outbreak ate at that restaurant on June 4 and 5, 2014. None of those people interviewed have been hospitalized, although two people were in the hospital after becoming ill. Symptoms of a Salmonella infection include diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps, and fever. The Public Health Agency of Canada has updated its investigation into the Salmonella outbreak linked to the consumption of chia seeds and sprouted chia seeded powder. There is an outbreak in the U.S. as well. Now, at least 44 people in Canada and 21 people in the U.S. are sick in this outbreak. In the U.S., the ill persons live in 12 states. Patients range in age from 1 to 81; two people have been hospitalized. No deaths have been reported to date. In Canada, the 44 ill persons live in British Columbia, Alberta, Ontario, and Quebec. The Public Health Agency of Canada has updated its investigation into the Salmonella outbreak in that country and in the United States linked to sprouted chia seed powder. Now, 34 people in Canada are sick, and 17 people in the U.S. are ill after eating contaminated products. Several products have been recalled in the U.S. and in Canada because they may be contaminated with the pathogenic Salmonella bacteria. Salmonella Outbreak at Proper Restaurant in Boone, NC
A Salmonella outbreak at Proper restaurant in Boone, NC has sickened nine people, according to the Appalachian District Health Department. Five of the cases are confirmed, there have been no hospitalizations. Those who became ill said they had eaten at the restaurant one to three days before developing symptoms which include diarrhea, stomach pain, fever, nausea and vomiting. Salmonella Outbreak Linked to Illegal Mexican Cheese in Illinois
The Illinois Department of Public Health has issued a warning about a Salmonella outbreak linked to illegally manufactured Mexican cheese. At least 100 people are sickened in this outbreak that has affected 13 counties. They are: Boone, Cook (including Chicago), DuPage, Fayette, Kane, Lake, LaSalle, Macon, Marion, McHenry, Vermillion, Washington, and Will. The illnesses have been occurring since July 2012. The same strain of Salmonella has sickened 100 people and is associated with the cheese. The average patient age is 9 years, and one-third of all patients have been hospitalized in this outbreak.
