Recall of Durisan Hand Sanitizer For Microbial Contamination Clarified

The recall of Durisan hand sanitizer for possible microbial contamination has been clarified with new information about labels and product sizes. These products were recalled for possible microbial contamination, first in March 2021, and then the recall was expanded twice. The pathogen in question is Burkholderia contaminans, a bacteria that is common in municipal water supplies. Use of a hand sanitizer contaminated with this bacteria is not a concern except if a person has a hand wound or scrapes. In that case, the bacteria could enter the bloodstream and cause serious illness if the person has a compromised immune system. Prairie Wolf Distillery Hand Sanitizer Recalled For Packaging Issue

Prairie Wolf Distillery of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma is voluntarily recalling all lots of Prairie Wolf Distillery hand sanitizer in two sizes (16.9 ounce and 20 ounce) because the containers resemble water bottles, so the product poses a risk of ingestion. No reports of adverse reactions have been received by the company to date in connection with this problem. This recall does not affect any other hand sanitizers from Prairie Wolf Distillery. Drinking hand sanitizer could result in alcohol toxicity. Symptoms of this condition include lack of coordination, slowed or slurred speech, drowsiness, and coma, which can be fatal. The Durisan Non-Alcohol Hand Sanitizer recall for possible Burkholderia contaminans has been expanded again to include more products. The recall notice states that the products were contaminated with a common municipal water supply borne bacteria. Using a hand sanitizer contaminated with this pathogen is considered low virulence, and problems can range from no reaction to possible reactions in a person with a hand wound or scrapes who has a compromised immune system. The recall of Scentsational Soaps hand sanitizers because they may contain methanol (wood alcohol), benzene, and acetaldehyde is being expanded to include more products. The original recall was issued on April 28, 2021. The new recall includes Goose Creek Hand Sanitizers and Coco TKO Hand Sanitizer.  No illnesses or adverse reactions have been reported to the company to date in connection with this problem. Durisan is expanding their recall of an antimicrobial hand sanitizer for possible Burkholderia contaminas contamination. The previous recall was for possible Burkholderia cepacia complex and Ralstonia pickettii contamination. The recall now includes products that have not yet expired. This issue was again discovered during a routine audit. No reports of adverse reactions or consumer complaints have been reported to the company to date. The product is applied topically to help reduce bacteria on the skin when soap and water aren't available. Durisan Antimicrobial Hand Sanitizer in several package sizes is being voluntarily recalled for possible microbial contamination. The recall was issued because of out of specification results of bacterial counts for Burkholderia cepacia complex and Ralstonia pickettii. The issue was discovered during a routine audit that was focused on production scale-up during the height of the coronavirus pandemic. No reports of adverse reactions or consumer complaints have been received by the company to date. The Durisan Antimicrobial Hand Sanitizer was packaged in sizes that ranged from 18 mL credit cards, to bottles that were sized 118 mL, 236 mL, 300 mL, and 500 mL. FDA Places All Hand Sanitizers Imported From Mexico on Import Alert

The FDA has placed all hand sanitizers imported from Mexico on import alert to help stop products that are in violation of U.S. law from entering the country until the agency can ascertain the product's safety. Many hand sanitizers imported from that country have tested positive for methanol contamination since the coronavirus pandemic began last year. Methanol, or wood alcohol, is toxic when absorbed through the skin and it is life-threatening when ingested. Methanol is not allowed in hand sanitizers. Under the import alert, the alcohol-based hand sanitizers imported from Mexico are subject to heightened FDA scrutiny. FDA staff can detain the shipment.
