CDC: Dole was First Listeria Outbreak Linked to Leafy Greens
The Dole Listeria outbreak evaded initial detection because leafy greens had never before been linked to a Listeria outbreak and were not included on food history questionnaires used in interviews of the first case patients, according to a new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Information (CDC). The deadly outbreak, linked to bagged salads produced at Dole’s plant in Springfield, Ohio and sold under a variety of brand names ended in April after sickening 33 people in the U.S. and Canada. In the U.S., 19 people were sickened and one of them died, according to the CDC. In Canada, 14 people were sickened and three of them died, although health officials in Canada have not been determined if Listeria was the cause of those deaths. FDA Found Listeria, Food Safety Violations at Oregon Potato
Five months after the FDA found Listeria and unsanitary conditions at Oregon Potato, food safety violations at the Pasco, WA facility had not been adequately addressed, according to a warning letter from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The March inspection was triggered by a Listeria outbreak linked to frozen vegetables that sickened nine people in four states. Three of the case patients died, although listeriosis was not considered to be a cause of death for two of them, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). After Listeria Outbreak, Texas Fines Blue Bell $850,000
After being linked to a 2015 Listeria outbreak that sickened at least 10 people, killing three of them, Blue Bell Creameries has been fined $850,000 by the the Texas Department of State Health Services for allowing adulterated product to enter the market and causing illness. But the company many only pay a fraction of the fine. Within 30 days, Blue Bell must pay $175,000, but will not have to pay the remaining balance if it follows the terms outlined in the enforcement agreement. FDA Found Listeria at Reser’s Halifax NC Facility
After two Listeria recalls, more bad foods for Reser's Fine Foods. Investigators from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) say Listeria has "maintained a presence" at Reser's facility in Halifax, NC since 2013, according to an FDA warning letter to the company made public this week. Salads produced by Reser's Fine Foods were recalled for Listeria in 2013 and earlier this year. During FDA inspections in 2013, 2014 and 2015 environmental samples collected from the plant were positive for Listeria. Samples collected on November 3-5, 2015, confirmed that some positive samples were from food contact surfaces. Four environmental swabs from inside the processing room were positive for Listeria.
