The family of an 81-year-old California woman who died after contracting listeriosis from a caramel apple has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Safeway grocery stores. Shirlee Jean Frey purchased the tainted treat from a Safeway store just before Halloween and began to feel illl the first week of November. Symptoms of a Listeria infection include fever, muscle aches, headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, and convulsions. Among pregnant women, listeriosis can lead to miscarriage or stillbirth, premature delivery, or infection of the newborn baby. Safeway is voluntarily recalling Safeway Select French Salted Caramel (Fleur De Sel) Premium Ice Cream because it contains undeclared peanuts. Consumers with allergies to peanuts should not eat this product as they risk severe or life-threatening reaction if they do. No illnesses or injuries have been reported. Tomatoes Sold at Coscto, Safeway Recalled for Salmonella
Taylor Farms is recalling Expo Fresh Roma tomatoes for possible Salmonella. The tomatoes were sold at Costco stores in: Los Angeles and Hawthorne, California; Tacoma and Lynwood stores in Washington, and Las Vegas. Only tomatoes packed on Sept. 5 or Sept. 6 are affected by the recall. The recalled tomatoes were also included in Sicilian Vegetable Salad served at deli counters at Safeway, Vons and Pavilions grocery stores in California, Nevada and Arizona. The salad kits had use-by dates of Sept. 20 and Sept. 21. Consumers who have purchased these products should not eat them. The problem was discovered during routine testing. USDA Extends Beef Products Warning to Kroger, Fred Meyer, Safeway, Walmart
The USDA has extended its warning about beef imported from XL Foods for E. coli 0157:H7 to include 30 states and several major grocery store chains. Now Kroger, Safeway, and WalMart, among others, are listed as facilities that carried the products. The USDA's FSIS has released another list of retail consignees that received the products. All beef and beef products produced on August 24, 27, 28, 29, and September 5, 2012 have been recalled by XL Foods. Safeway Expands Ground Beef Items Recall for E. coli 0157:H7
Safeway is expanding its September 22, 2012 recall for ground beef products made from XL Foods beef trim for E. coli 0157:H7. Its supplier, Interstate Meat Distributors, has stated that some of the ground beef products made for Safeway included trimmings that are part of the expanded Canadian recall. The recall is for stores in Idaho, Montana, Oregon, and Washington state. All fresh ground beef sold from the self-service meat cooler and the full-serve meat counter with Sell By dates of 8/28/12 to 9/23/12 are recalled. Safeway stores are recalling a long list of ground beef items that may have been made with beef trim imported from XL Foods in Canada. The meat may be contaminated with E. coli 0157:H7. The USDA issued a Public Health Alert for the beef trim on September 21, 2012. The recalled products have sell by dates of 9/7/12 to 9/23/12. No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with the consumption of these products. The products were sold in Oregon, Washington, and Montana. These products are part of a Canadian recall that was expanded five times in the past week. The beef trim was distributed to at least eight states so there will probably be more derivative recalls.
