The FDA is updating the red onion Salmonella outbreak recall information, since several companies and brands have recalled red, yellow, white, and sweet onions in association with this outbreak. Not all brands or companies have sold onions that are linked to the outbreak. The traceback investigation is ongoing but has identified Thomson International, Inc. of Bakersfield, California as a likely source of potentially contaminated red onions. The case count remains the same, with 640 people sick in 43 states. Eighty-five people have been hospitalized because they are so sick. Pacific Gold Red Onions and Yellow Onions Recalled For Salmonella
Pacific Gold Red Onions and Yellow Onions are being recalled for possible Salmonella contamination. There is a multistate Salmonella Newport outbreak linked to Thomson International and other brands of red onions, but Progressive Produce, the company that produces the Pacific Gold brand of onions, has not received any reports of illnesses to date associated with these recalled items. The recalled onions were sold on the West Coast, at Trader Joe's (conventional red onions were sold sold in Arizona, California, Nevada, and Utah stores), and Ralph's (conventional yellow onions sold only in California stores). Costco recalls red onions and products made with those onions for possible Salmonella contamination. There is a Salmonella Newport outbreak that has sickened almost 400 people in the U.S., but no illnesses have been reported to Costco in association with these recalled products to date. The first recall is for 10 pound bags of Onions 52 Jumbo Yellow Onions, Hartley's Best label that were sold between May 1, 2020 and August 2, 2020 in the Northwest region, Los Angeles region, and select San Diego region locations in California, along with Colorado and Utah. Giant Eagle onions and products are being recalled for possible Salmonella contamination after their supplier, Onion 52, sourced onions from Thomson International. The company pulled all of these products on Saturday, August 1, 2020 but some consumers may have purchased them. There is a nationwide Salmonella Newport outbreak potentially linked to those onions, but there are no reported illnesses among Giant Eagle customers to date that are associated with this recall. Giant Eagle recalled red, yellow, and white onions sold in produce departments in Pennsylvania, Ohio, West Virginia, Indiana, and Maryland. The newest Salmonella Newport outbreak has sickened at least 396 people in 34 states and has hospitalized 59. The outbreak is potentially linked to red onions sold by Thomson International. Those onions were recalled last week. But which stores sold the onions recalled for possible Salmonella contamination? And are products made with those onions recalled? Canadian Salmonella Outbreak Linked to Red Onions Imported From U.S.
The Canadian Salmonella outbreak is linked to red onions imported from the United States, according to the Public Health Agency of Canada. In addition, there are 55 more ill persons in Canada with this infection since the last update on July 24, 2020. The Centers for Disease Control in the United States has not yet said anything about this finding. Until more is known about this outbreak, people in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and Ontario are advised to not eat any red onions imported to Canada from the United States, including food products that contain red onions.
