FDA Says Salmonella Newport Onion Outbreak Over After 1,127 Sickened
The FDA says that the Salmonella Newport onion outbreak is now over after sickening at least 1,127 people in 48 states. FDA's traceback investigation identified a packing facility and multiple farms in California that supplied red onions during the "time of interest." Joint field-level investigations by the FDA, California Department of Public Health, and California Department of Food and Agriculture were initiated according to traceback investigations. But by that time, most of the product had already been harvested and distributed. The FDA has compiled more than 2000 product and environmental samples. The Canadian red onion Salmonella outbreak has ended after sickening 515 people in seven provinces according to the Public Health Agency Canada. The outbreak is linked to Thomson International onions imported from the United States. There is a related outbreak ongoing in the U.S. that has sickened at least 1,012 people in 47 states, but the FDA and CDC have not updated that investigation since September 1, 2020. The case count in Canada by province is: British Columbia (121), Alberta (293), Saskatchewan (35), Manitoba (26), Ontario (14), Quebec (25) and Prince Edward Island (1). The Canadian red onion Salmonella outbreak has grown again, but there is no change in U.S. numbers. The United States outbreak has not been updated by the CDC or FDA since September 1, 2020, when that agency reported at least 1,021 sick in 47 states. Illnesses in both countries have a similar genetic fingerprint, which means they likely share a common source of infection. Murray's Cheese Dips and other dips sold at Fred Meyers, Frys, and Kroger stores, are being recalled for possible Salmonella contamination because they may have been made with Onions 52 red, yellow, and white onions from Thomson International. There is a multistate Salmonella Newport outbreak linked to Thomson International onions, but each of the following five recall notices states, "No customer illnesses have been confirmed to date."
