The FDA has posted two recall announcements for ALDI Bakers Corner Flour because it may be contaminated with E. coli O26 and is linked to an outbreak that has sickened at least 17 people in 8 states. The Rhode Island Department of Health found the pathogen during testing of a bag of flour. The flour was made at the ADM Milling flour mill in Buffalo, New York. The first recall is for 5 pound bags of Bakers Corner All Purpose Flour and is similar to the Rhode Island recall notice. The flour was sold in select ALDI stores in these states: Connecticut, Delaware, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont and West Virginia. ALDI Baker's Corner flour has been linked to an E. coli O26 outbreak that has sickened at least 17 people in 8 states, according to the Centers for Diseases Control ands Prevention (CDC). That flour was recalled on May 23, 2019. The case count by state is: California (1), Connecticut (1), Missouri (1), New Jersey (1), New York (5), Pennsylvania (2), and Rhode Island (1). Illness onset dates range from December 11, 2018 to April 17, 2018. The patient age range is from 7 to 86 years. Of 17 people who have been interviewed by public health officials, 3 have been hospitalized. Officials tested a five pound bag of the product at the state health laboratories. The advisory affects just one lot code of Baker's Corner All Purpose Flour, packaged in five pound bags. Two large chain stores, Public and Winn-Dixie, have recalled two lot codes of Pillsbury flour for possible Salmonella contamination. Pillsbury, Hometown Foods, and the FDA have not yet published anything about this recall on their sites. UPDATE: The FDA has released information about this issue. Ab out 12,245 cases have been recalled. The UPC number of the recalled flour is 0 5150022241 6. Just the lot numbers and the best if used by dates are different on the two lots. General Mills is recalling five pound bags of Gold Medal unbleached flour for possible Salmonella contamination. This is another reminder to not eat raw cookie dough or batter, because both the flour and eggs may be, and have been, contaminated with pathogenic bacteria. The recall is for one date code; the better if used by date is April 20, 2020. There have been no "direct consumer reports of confirmed illnesses" related to this product. Warnings against eating raw dough have been issued by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The holiday season is when most people bake sweets, and eating raw dough and batter is a fun thing to do. But it can make you very sick. People also often make doughs for crafts, such as making Christmas ornaments. Never use raw flour for those projects. The FDA is issuing a warning to consumers not to eat raw dough because of health risks of contracting an E. coli HUS infection. Eating any raw dough or batter can make you sick because of raw eggs and raw flour. Eggs can contain Salmonella bacteria, and, surprisingly, raw flour can contain pathogenic E. coli bacteria. In fact, there was a large E. coli O121 and O26 outbreak linked to General Mills flour just last year in the U.S. At least 63 people in 24 states were sickened; seventeen people were hospitalized because their illnesses were so severe, and one person developed hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), a type of kidney failure. E. coli HUS Outbreak Linked to General Mills Flour Highlights Risk of Raw Flour
Consumption of raw flour can lead to E. coli HUS infections, according to a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine. The study, titled "Shiga Toxin-Producing E. coli (STEC) Infections Associated with Flour," looks at the 2016 outbreak linked to recalled General Mills flour. That outbreak was caused by Shiga toxin-producing E. coli O21 and O26 bacteria. The CDC investigation ended on September 29, 2016 and stated that "Although the outbreak investigation is over, illnesses are expected to continue for some time. The recalled flour and flour products have long shelf lives and may still be in people's homes. Consumers who don't know about the recalls could continue to eat the products and get sick." MMWR Covers Canadian Flour E. coli O121 Outbreak
The CDC's Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR) for the week of July 78, 2017 has a report about the outbreak of Shiga toxin-producing E. coli O121 infections in Canada that were associated with flour. That outbreak sickened at least 30 people. Patients affected in this outbreak lived in three provinces when the illnesses were first discovered. PulseNet Canada identified a cluster of six E. coli non-O157 isolates with a matching PFGE pattern on December 29, 2016. An investigation was launched in January 2017. Patient illness onset dates ranged from November 2016 to April 2017. As of May 23, 2017, a total of 29 cases were identified in Alberta, British Columbia, Newfoundland and Labrador, Ontario, Quebec, and Saskatchewan. Smucker Foods of Canada Recalls Flour for E. coli O121
Smucker Foods of Canada is voluntarily recalling some production codes of Golden Temple, Swad, and Maya flour products sold in the U.S. for possible E. coli O121 contamination. These products were made by Ardent Mills in Saskatchewan, Canada. The products are all packaged in 20 pound paper bags and were distributed nationwide to 19 distributors and two small retailers. There are no reported illnesses associated with the U.S. product recall. There is an E. coli O121 outbreak in Canada that is associated with some flours produced by Ardent Mills.
