Child Labor at JBS Meat Packing Plants Uncovered in Lawsuit

Child labor at JBS meat packing plants in Minnesota and Nebraska has allegedly been uncovered in a court injunction. No employer in the United States can use any oppressive child labor in commerce or in the production of goods for commerce. Children aged 14 and 15 can be employed outside school hours but only in specified non-manufacturing and non-hazardous jobs, for limited periods of time and under specific conditions. Children were allegedly seen working on the killing floor, which is specifically prohibited under the Department of Labor's Child Labor Regulations. Children are only allowed to be messengers on killing floors, or similar occupations that require them to enter the area infrequently and only for short periods of time. Feds Investigating Six Meatpacking Plants After COVID-19 Outbreaks

Federal regulators are investigating six meatpacking plants after large COVID-19 outbreaks have been linked to those facilities. The plants include JBS Packerland in Green Bay, Wisconsin, American Foods Group in Green Bay, Smithfield Foods in Cudahy, Wisconsin, and Salms Partners in Denmark, Wisconsin, Pizza crust manufacturer TNT Crust in Green Bay and Birds Eye Foods in Darien, Wisconsin are also being investigated, according to Wisconsin Public Radio. Meatpacking and meat processing plants have become hotspots for coronavirus illnesses in the past few weeks. Smithfield Foods in South Dakota had to close last week after 300 employees were sickened by the virus. JBS Ground Beef Salmonella Outbreak: Recall Expands, Distribution List Published

The recall and distribution lists related to the JBS ground beef Salmonella outbreak have expanded. Last week we told you about the Salmonella Newport outbreak linked to those products that has sickened at least 57 people in 16 states. Now, another 400,000 pounds of ground beef products have been recalled, bringing the total to 6,937,195 pounds. You can see the long list of products, where the ground beef may have been sold, and pictures of products labels at the USDA web site. The product brand names include Kroger Cedar River Farms, Connor Perfect Choice, Gourmet Burger, Grass Run Farms Natural Beef, JBS Generic, and Showcase.
