The Salmonella Adelaide outbreak linked to precut melons has now sickened 70 people in 7 states. That is an increase of 10 patients since the last update on June 8, 2018. Thirty-four of those patients have been hospitalized because they are so sick. The case count by state is: Illinois (7), Indiana (11), Kentucky (1), Michigan (38), Missouri (10), Ohio (2), and Tennessee (1). Out of 63 people who have been interviewed, 34, or 54%, are in the hospital. Two more states have reported patients since the last update: Kentucky and Tennessee. The most recent illness started on June 3, 2018, so this outbreak will most likely grow, since the melon products were not recalled until June 8, 2018. The FDA has issued more information about the Salmonella Adelaide outbreak that is linked to recalled precut melon. That outbreak has sickened at least 60 people in 5 states, and hospitalized 66% of the patients. Now the government has revealed that the recalled melons were also sold in Iowa, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Wisconsin. That means the recalled precut melon has been sold in 12 states. Attorneys File First Salmonella Lawsuit in Ohio; Others May Sue
The first Salmonella lawsuit in the multistate outbreak that is linked to precut melons has been filed by Pritzker Hageman attorneys. Their client is a 73-year-old woman who ate the fruit that was allegedly purchased from a Walmart store in Findlay, Ohio just before Mother's Day 2018. The woman was hospitalized and needed surgery to repair an aortic aneurysm in her abdomen that developed after the infection. She spent days in the hospital and is recovering in a nursing home. The Salmonella lawsuit was filed in U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Ohio. Michigan has been hit hard in the Salmonella Adelaide outbreak that is linked to precut melon products. The melons were sold at produced by Caito Foods of Indiana and were sold at Costco, Jay C, Kroger, Payless, Owen’s, Sprouts, Trader Joe’s, Walgreens, Walmart, and Whole Foods/Amazon stories in Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri, North Carolina and Ohio. Of the 60 patients identified so far in this outbreak, 32 live in Michigan. We don't know why there are so many outbreak patients in that state. Pritzker Hageman lawyers have been retained for a Salmonella lawsuit against Walmart. A 73-year-old woman from Ohio allegedly contracted salmonellosis in May 2018 after eating precut melons purchased from a Walmart store in Findlay, Ohio. Melons and salads containing melons produced by Caito Foods have been recalled in Michigan, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Missouri, North Carolina, and Ohio.
