CSPI Wants USDA to Name Poultry Producers in Salmonella Outbreak

Center for Science in the Public Interest wants the USDA to name slaughterhouses and processing facilities who may be associated with the two recent Salmonella outbreaks tied to poultry. One of those outbreaks is ongoing. An ongoing Salmonella Reading outbreak linked to raw turkey products has sickened 279 people and hospitalized 107 in the United States. One person living in California died in that outbreak. The last update on that outbreak was issued on February 15, 2019. And the Salmonella Infantis outbreak linked to raw chicken that sickened 129 people in the United States has just ended, according to the CDC. Raw Turkey Salmonella Reading Outbreak Grows to 279 Sick

The raw turkey Salmonella Reading outbreak has grown to include 279 sick people, according to an update by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Of those patients, 107 people have been hospitalized, and one person who lived in California has died. That's an addition of 63 more people from 24 states and the District of Columbia. Illness onset dates range form November 20, 2017 to January 29, 2019. The patient age range is from less than 1 year to 101. Forty-eight percent of patients have been hospitalized. The raw turkey Salmonella Reading outbreak has been updated by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The case count remains the same as it was in the last update - 216 sick in 38 states, with 84 hospitalizations and one death in California. But another product has been tied to illnesses. The Salmonella Reading turkey outbreak is number five on our list of Top 10 Food Poisoning Outbreaks of 2018. And this outbreak is ongoing. The raw turkey Salmonella Reading outbreak has grown to 216 sick, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Eighty-four people are hospitalized and one person who lived in California has died. This outbreak has also sickened people in Canada. That's an increase of 52 more ill persons since the last update on November 8, 2018. Jennie-O Recalls Raw Ground Turkey Products for Salmonella Contamination

Jennie-O Turkey Store Sales, based in Faribault, Minnesota, is recalling about 164,210 pounds of raw ground turkey products because they may be contaminated with Salmonella Reading. The USDA and officials are investigating illnesses associated with a Salmonella Reading outbreak that is linked to raw turkey products. This recall is part of traceback activities as part of that multistate outbreak. A sample of Jennie-O brand ground turkey in an intact, unopened package taken from a patient's home tested positive for Salmonella Reading. The bacteria found in the turkey is closely related genetically to isolates taken from the patient. The recalled products were produced on October 22, 2018 and October 23, 2018. Senators Ask USDA For Information About Deadly Salmonella Outbreak Linked to Raw Turkey

Senators Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) and Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) have sent a letter to the USDA to ask them to provide the public with more information about the deadly multidrug-resistant Salmonella Reading outbreak linked to raw turkey products. The letter reads, in part, "USDA’s failure to provide identifying information for contaminated turkey to the public in advance of the holiday season is simply unconscionable. As such, we demand that you reverse course and immediately disclose the names of the slaughter facilities and processing plants—and, if possible, the consumer-level brand names—linked to this dangerous outbreak, so that Americans across the country can come together without worrying for the safety of their friends, family, and loved ones." More Jennie-O Raw Ground Turkey Recalled; Associated with Salmonella Outbreak

The USDA has quietly updated the recall notice for Jennie-O raw ground turkey to include another 55,888 pounds of the product, and another product was added to the recall list. This ground turkey is being recalled in association with a multistate Salmonella outbreak that has sickened at least 164 people in 35 states. The newly added recalled product is 1 pound packages of "GROUND TURKEY 90% LEAN | 10% FAT with a "use by" date of 10/2/2018. The turkey has the establishment number "P-190" inside the USDA mark of inspection. It was sold in retail locations nationwide.
