Huge Recall of Beef in Canada For Possible E. coli O157:H7

A huge recall of beef in Canada has been going on since September 30, 2019. All in all, there have been 19 separate recalls and recall updates issued since that date so far. No illnesses have been reported in connection with these recalls. This recall has reached into the U.S. as well, with the USDA issuing a public safety alert. The recalls, which were triggered by the Canadian Food Inspection Ageny's inspection activities, include: Recall of Globe Meats Fresh Market & Grill ground veal on September 26, 2019. Ryding-Regency Meat Packers recalled raw beef and raw veal products on October 1, 2019. those products include skirt steak, rib eye, bead roast, and flank steak, among others. Salmonella Outbreak Associated With Restore Public House in La Crosse WI

A Salmonella outbreak associated with steak tartare served at Restore Public House in La Crosse, Wisconsin has sickened 17 people, Jen Rombalski, Health Director of the La Crosse County Health Department told Food Poisoning Bulletin in an email. Steak tartare is made from beef that is finely chopped, mixed with other ingredients, and served raw. This food is considered "high risk." The restaurant prepared it properly, according to public health officials. Restaurants can serve these foods, according to Ms. Rombalski, as long as they post an advisory telling consumers that the food is risky to consume. American Beef Packers Beef Recalled: Unfit for Human Consumption

American beef Packers of Chino, California, is recalling about 24,428 pounds of raw beef products that are "deemed unfit for human consumption," according to a notice by the USDA. FSIS inspection personnel retained the carcass and collected a sample for analysis. Before the test results came back, the carcass was released and processed into raw intact and non-tact beef products which were distributed to federal  establishments in California and Oregon. The recalled beef items were produced and packaged on August 21, 2019. The recalled products, which have the establishment number "EST. 34741" are: Bulk pack combo bins containing “AMERICAN BEEF PACKERS 85 BONELESS BEEF CHUCKS” with LOT NO.110 and BIN No. 85 and BIN No. 86. CDC Report: Salmonella Newport Shows Decreased Sensitivity to Azithromycin

In the current CDC's Morbidity and Mortality Weekly report, some bacteria in a Salmonella Newport outbreak that was linked to beef and to a cheese imported from Mexico had decreased susceptibility to azithromycin and nonsusceptibility to ciprofloxacin. This susceptibility has emerged recently, because that serotype with decreased susceptibility to azithromycin wasn't found in any isolates in the National Antimicrobial Resistance Monitoring System (NARMS) surveillance before 2016. A genetically distinct group of MDR Newport isolates was identified in the two outbreaks. Callicrate Beef Products Recalled for possible E. coli O26 Contamination

Good Food Concepts of Colorado is recalling about 1,290 pounds of raw, intact and non-intact Callicrate beef because it may be contaminated with E. coli O26 bacteria. There is no word in the recall notice if anyone has been sickened. You can see the long list of recalled products at the USDA web site. Some of the products include Callicrate Beef New York Strip, Skirt Steak, 80/20 Ground Beef, Philly Meat Beef, Ground Chuck Beef, Filet Mignon, and Sirloin Tip, among others. CDC Declares Adams Farm E. coli Outbreak Over

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has posted their final update on the investigation into the multistate outbreak of Shiga toxin-producing E. coli O157:H7 infections linked to beef products produced by Adams Farm. This outbreak appears to be over. Eleven people were infected with the outbreak strain of STEC O157:H7 in five states. Seven of those people were hospitalized. One ill person developed hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), a type of kidney failure. No deaths were reported. The case count by state is: Connecticut (2), Massachusetts (5), Pennsylvania (2), Virginia (1), and West Virginia (1).  Illness onset dates ranged from June 27, 2016 to September 10, 206.
