FMA International imported one case from the affected lot and it was distributed in Oregon to a specialty food distributor. The one case has been accounted for and has been destroyed. Thirteen people have been hospitalized because they are so ill, and one person who lived in Maryland has died. As of November 9, 2022, which was the last time this outbreak investigation was updated, the case count by state is: California (1), Illinois (2), Maryland (3), Massachusetts (2), New Jersey (1), and New York (7). A health alert has been issued for Seville Spread in two flavors, by the Ohio Department of Agriculture. The product was not tested for antibiotics, and there are no pasteurization records for the milk that was used to make the cheese. All milk that is used to make dairy products in that state must be tested for the presence of antibiotics before processing. People who are allergic to some types of antibiotics could have a serious reaction if they eat these products. And the milk that is used to make this type of soft cheese must be pasteurized. Unpasteurized milk may contain harmful pathogens such as Campylobacter, Listeria monocytogenes, Salmonella, and E. coli that can make you very sick. These outbreaks have happened regularly since 2018, and cause serious illness and hospitalizations. The history of deli meat and cheese listeria outbreaks is deadly. These products are susceptible to Listeria contamination for several reasons. First, this pathogen is very persistent and it can protect itself against regular cleaning products by producing a biofilm. Once it has been introduced into a deli environment it is very difficult to eradicate. The bacteria can hide in cracks and in machines that are difficult to clean, such as deli meat slicers. Most Deli Meat and Cheese Listeria Cases Are in New York State
In the latest outbreak, most of the deli meat and cheese Listeria cases are in New York, according to the FDA and CDC. Seven of the 16 cases live in that state. In fact, among seven patients from New York who were interviewed, five said they bought sliced deli meat or cheese from at least one location of NetCost Market. In 2021, the outbreak strain of Listeria monocytogenes was found in several environmental and food samples during inspections at NetCost Markets in Brooklyn and Staten Island. Then, in September 2022, the outbreak strain was found in the same Brooklyn NetCost Market. That store is not linked to the most recent illnesses, however.
