SkinGuard24 Hand Sanitizer Recalled For Labeled Methanol

SG24 LLC is voluntarily recalling SkinGuard24 Hand Sanitizer products that are labeled to contain methanol. Methanol is not allowed in hand sanitizer because it is toxic and can be absorbed through the skin. In addition, it can be fatal if ingested. Substantial methanol exposure can cause nausea, vomiting, headache, and blurred vision. If ingested, it can cause permanent blindness, seizures, coma, permanent damage to the nervous system, and death. Young children who accidentally ingest these products and adolescents and adults who drink them as and alcohol substitute are most at risk. FDA Recalls Certain Hand Sanitizers with 1-Propanol as Toxic

The FDA is recalling certain hand sanitizers with 1-propanol as toxic, adding to the  list of hand sanitizers that contain methanol, or wood alcohol. These hand sanitizers are labeled to contain ethanol or isopropyl alcohol, which are the correct ingredients, but have tested positive for 1-propanol contamination, which is not an acceptable ingredient for hand sanitizer. Incredible Products SA DE CV is voluntarily recalling one lot of Gelbac T Antibacterial Handgel because it potentially contains methanol, wood alcohol, that is not permitted in these products. Methanol is toxic and can be absorbed through the skin. If consumed, methanol can and has caused permanent blindness, seizures, coma, and death. Young children and others who drink these products are most at risk. FDA sampling of the product at the port of entry found the undeclared methanol. Roque Plast SA de CV is voluntarily recalling Command Brands Gel AntiBac Hand Sanitizer because it may be contaminated with methanol, or wood alcohol, that is not declared on the label. The FDA may have found the ingredient when the hand sanitizer was presented for import in the United States. The final analysis hasn't been received, but the FDA suggested the recall and the company complied. Four Americans Are Dead After Ingesting Methanol Hand Sanitizers

According to the Centers for Disease Control and PRevention's Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report for the week of August 5, 2020, four Americans are dead after ingesting methanol hand sanitizers. Alcohol-based hand sanitizers should only contain ethanol or isopropanol, but recently, some of them have been found to contain methanol. Methanol, or wood alcohol, is toxic when absorbed through the skin and can kill if ingested. Children can accidentally consume this product, and some adults use ethanol or isopropanol for substitutes for alcohol. Many recalls of these products have been issued in the past few months. FDA Puts Some Hand Sanitizer Manufacturers on Import Alert

The FDA is reiterating its warning about dangerous alcohol-based hand sanitizers that contain undeclared methanol, and is also putting some hand sanitizer manufacturers on import alert. That means that any product those companies try to import into the United States will be stopped and held at the border. The government is also working with these hand sanitizer manufacturers to recall products and is encouraging retailers to remove recalled products from store shelves.
