Employees of Hawaiian Airlines and Chili's are among the 93 people sickened in a Hepatitis A outbreak on Oahu. Also included are employees from Baskin Robbins, Sushi Shiono, Taco Bell, and Costco. This does not indicate that these establishments are the source of the outbreak, and at this time no other illnesses have been attributed to these locations, according to the Hawaii Department of Health. However, anyone who consumed food or drink at these locations during the identified dates (click preceding link) should contact their doctor for preventative care. A vaccination can prevent the onset of illness if administered within the first two weeks after exposure. A hepatitis A outbreak in Canada is linked to frozen berries sold at Costco in that country. The Public Health Agency of Canada is investigating an outbreak in three provinces. The product, Nature's Touch Organic Berry Cherry Blend, is being recalled by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency. You can see more information about the recalled product here. Costco Warehouse Fails Food Safety Inspection in Florida
The Costco Warehouse at 10921 Causeway Boulevard in Brandon, Florida failed a Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services inspection this week. On Monday, December 14, 2015, food safety inspectors found enough problems in the "Club Demonstration Services" area that it was closed under a "Stop Use Order." Inspectors found live roaches in that area and in the food storage and ware-washing room. Several food items were removed from sale because they were being held at dangerous temperatures. Crab legs were being held at 55°F and sausages were being held at 46°F. Perishable foods must be held at 40°F or below so bacteria will not grow. The Colorado Department of Public Health andEnvironment (CDPHE) is investigating an E. coli O157:H7 outbreak linked to chicken salad purchased at Costco stores in that state in late October. At least four people have been sickened with E. coli O157:H7 infections in Colorado. Other states with confirmed E. coli cases linked to Costco chicken salad are Utah, Montana, and Washington. Costco Recalls Foster Farms Salmonella Chicken
Costco is reminding consumers that fresh chicken products sold under the Foster Farms and Kirkland brand produced in March are being recalled for Salmonella contamination. The products are linked to a huge nationwide outbreak that has been ongoing since March 2013. The recalled items have "use or freeze by" dates ranging from March 17, 2014 to March 31, 2014. The identifying plant marks on the recalled products are P-6137, P-6137A or P-7632 that should be inside the USDA mark of inspection. Costco Pepper Salmonella Warning
Salmonella may be in some packages of Costco pepper. Over the last 24 hours, the company has been calling the 140,000 of its customers who may be affected by the potentially contaminated product, according to NBC News. The company has not issued a recall or posted product safety information on its website. The product in question is Kirkland Signature Coarse Ground Malabar Black Pepper with a "best before" date of March 2017. During routine testing the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) discovered a rare strain, Salmonella Duisburg, in some of the samples, according to NBC. Contaminated spices are an ongoing problem. Costco Recalls More Foster Farms Chicken For Salmonella
A Costco chicken recall for Salmonella has been expanded. The store on El Camino Real in San Francisco is recalling an additional 14,093 rotisserie chicken products that may be contaminated with a strain of Salmonella linked to a multi-state outbreak, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced today. These recalled products are in addition to the 9,043 rotisserie chicken products that were recalled on Oct. 12. The products under recall are: 13,455 “Kirkland Signature Foster Farms” rotisserie chickens and 638 total units of “Kirkland Farm” rotisserie chicken soup, rotisserie chicken leg quarters, and rotisserie chicken salad.
