Salmonella Newport Outbreak Linked to Ground Beef Grows; Lawsuits Possible
The Salmonella Newport outbreak linked to JBS Tolleson ground beef has ground to include 120 people sick in 22 states. Thirty-three people have been hospitalized, which is a very high percentage for this pathogen. Sixty-three more people were added to the outbreak total since the last update on October 4, 2018. Six more states were added to the outbreak total: Hawaii, Kansas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas, and Washington. Illness onset dates ranged from August 5, 2018 to September 28, 2018. The multistate Salmonella Newport outbreak that is linked to recalled JBS Tolleson ground beef has prompted the Wyoming Department of Health to issue food safety advice about handling this food. The ground beef Salmonella outbreak is just one in a long line of food poisoning illness outbreaks linked to this product, including the deadly E. coli O26 outbreak linked to Cargill ground beef. The USDA has added more stores to the retail distribution list in the JBS Tolleson ground beef Salmonella Newport outbreak. The case count still stands at 57 people sick in 16 states' more than 30% of those patients have been hospitalized because they are so ill. Almost 7 million pounds of ground beef and ground beef products have been recalled. These products were sold in some nationwide chain stores and in Alabama, California, Colorado, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, South Carolina, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming. The states of Arizona and Colorado are hit the hardest in the JBS Tolleson ground beef Salmonella Newport outbreak. There are at least 57 people sick in that outbreak. Arizona has 15 sick, while Colorado has 12 sick. Almost seven million pounds of ground beef has been recalled in this outbreak. JBS Tolleson is located in Tolleson, Arizona. The ground beef products, which range from beefburgers to ground beef, all have the establishment number "EST. 267" inside the USDA mark of inspection.Epidemiologic and traceback information indicates that ground beef produced by JBS TOlleson is a likely source of this outbreak. Last week we told you about the Salmonella Newport outbreak linked to those products that has sickened at least 57 people in 16 states. Now, another 400,000 pounds of ground beef products have been recalled, bringing the total to 6,937,195 pounds. The JBS Tolleson ground beef Salmonella outbreak has sickened at least 57 people in 16 states, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Fourteen people have been hospitalized. No deaths have been reported. Illnesses started on dates ranging from August 5, 2018 to September 6, 2018. Congresswoman Rosa Delauro (D-CT) is questioning the traceback timeline of the Cargill Meat Solutions E. coli O26 contaminated ground beef that was linked to a deadly food poisoning outbreak. She wrote to USDA Secretary Perdue, "I write today out of concern regarding the USDA’s investigation into the ongoing multistate outbreak of Escherichia coli O26, which has been linked to ground beef. According to the Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS), the Agency was notified of an investigation of E. coli O26 illnesses on August 16, 2018. However, it was not until August 30, 2018 that the first recall related to this outbreak was initiated by Publix Super Markets Inc." The USDA has released the distribution list of where the ground beef in the deadly Cargill E. coli O26 outbreak was sold. That Cargill E. coli outbreak sickened 18 people in four states and killed one person in Florida. Six people were hospitalized, and one person developed hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), a type of kidney failure. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has released information about the deadly E. coli O26 outbreak linked to recalled ground beef from Cargill Meat Solutions. This outbreak has already been declared over. The link to Cargill beef was just announced yesterday by the FDA. The outbreak was originally announced in a USDA recall by Publix grocery stores in Florida. Eighteen people in four states were sickened in this E. coli O26 outbreak. Six of those patients were hospitalized because they were so ill. One person died. The case count by state is: Colorado (1), Florida (15), Massachusetts (1), and Tennessee (1).
