The Pure Eire yogurt E. coli outbreak case count has grown to 17, according to a new update by the Washington State Department of Health. One new case from Arizona, who has been infected with the outbreak strain, has been identified. All three of the Arizona cases are considered secondary infections. According to the patient age range chart, the new case is between the ages of 10 and 19. The outbreak case count by county in Washington is: Benton (1), Clark (1), King (9), Snohomish (2), and Walla Walla (1). Three cases are in Yavapai county in Arizona. The Pure Eire Yogurt E. coli outbreak has now sickened 15 people in Washington state and Arizona, according to an update by the Washington Department of Health. Nine people have been hospitalized, which is double the usual percentage for an E. coli outbreak, and four patients have developed hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), a kind of kidney failure. Organic Yogurt E. coli Outbreak Now Includes Secondary Case in AZ
An organic yogurt E. coli outbreak that includes 11 confirmed cases in Washington now also includes a secondary food poisoning case in Arizona, a health department spokesperson told Food Poisoning Bulletin today. The patient, a 2-year-old girl, did not eat the yogurt but appears to have been exposed to the bacteria by a relative visiting from Washington. She did not require hospitalization. The E. coli O157:H7 outbreak has been linked to grass-fed, organic yogurt made by Pure Eire Dairy of Othello, WA. PCC Market Yogurt by Pure Eire Dairy is linked to a multi county E .coli O157:H7 outbreak in Washington state, according to a news release issued by the Washington State Department of Health. Both PCC Market and Pure Eire yogurt have been recalled. Pure Eire Dairy is working with the state Department of Agriculture to identify and recall all affected products. Pure Eire Dairy, which is located in Washington state, is recalling Pure Eire yogurt, PCC Markets yogurt, and PCC Market products made with that yogurt for possible E. coli contamination. Pure Eire yogurt may be associated with a Washington state E. coli O157:H7 outbreak that has sickened at least six people in four counties.
