CDC Issues HAN Report About Severe Vibrio Vulnificus Infections

The CDC has issued a HAN Report about severe Vibrio vulnificus infections that are associated with warming coastal waters. The report is to notify healthcare providers, laboratories, and public health departments about recent reports of fatal Vibrio vulnificus infections from food and infected wounds, and to warn the public about this issue. Vibrio causes about 80,000 human illnesses every year in the United States. About a dozen species of this pathogen are pathogenic to humans. Vibrio parahaemolyticus causes the most infections, follow by Vibrio alginolyticus. About 150 to 200 Vibrio vulnificus infections are reported to the CDC every year. FDA Warns Restaurants About Oysters From Groton, Connecticut

The FDA is warning restaurants and consumers to avoid oysters from Groton, Connecticut harvest area because they may be contaminated. The notice did not state which pathogen may be affecting the oysters. The states that received the oysters include Connecticut, Massachusetts, New York, Pennsylvania, and Virginia. The oysters may have been further distributed from these states. The oysters from Groton Approved area in Connecticut that were harvested from August 28, 2023 through August 30, 2023 are subject to this warning. The dealers that sold the oysters are CT-393-SS, AQ, CT-004-SS, AQ, and CT-020-SS, AQ. The oysters have the lot codes L-30 and L-26B1. Canadian Fortune Raw Oysters Linked to MN Norovirus Outbreak

A norovirus outbreak linked to Fortune raw oysters harvested from Nova Scotia, Canada has prompted the FDA to issue an alert. Restaurants and food retailers that have received shipments of these oysters that were distributed by Bill and Stanley Oyster Company of Nova Scotia should not sell or serve them. The oysters were harvested from NS 10, an oyster harvest area in Nova Scotia, on June 9, 2023. The oysters were distributed to these 17 states and the District of Columbia: California, Colorado, Connecticut, DC, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Massachusetts, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, and Wisconsin. FDA on Wild Harvest Oysters Salmonella Outbreak in FL GA AL

FDA is weighing in on the wild harvest oysters Salmonella outbreak that has sickened at least eight people in Florida, Georgia, and Alabama.  Any retailers and restaurants that have received wild harvest oysters from harvest area FL-3012 in Cedar Key, Florida, harvested between December 16, 2022 and February 24, 2023 should be discarded. Consumers who bought those oysters at retail in those three states should also discard them. The FDA says it's possible that other states may have received the oysters. So if you purchased raw oysters, check the packaging to see if they were harvested in that area. Baynes Sound Oysters May Be Contaminated With Norovirus

Baynes Sound Oysters may be contaminated with norovirus, according to the FDA. That agency has issued an alert warning restaurants and retailers to avoid selling the shellfish from British Columbia, and warning consumers not to eat them raw. The FDA is working with state, local, and federal officials and with Canadian officials on a norovirus outbreak that is linked to raw oysters from British Columbia, Canada. Illnesses have only been reported in Canada. There are no known cases of notorious in the U.S. that are associated with these oysters. But it's possible that states received these oysters through distribution to the United States. CDC Weighs In On Texas Oysters Norovirus Outbreak

The CDC has weighed in on the Texas oysters norovirus outbreak that has sickened more than 200 people. The oysters were harvested between 11/17/2022 and 12/7/2022 from harvest area TX 1 in Galveston Bay. Patients in this outbreak, 211 of them, live in Florida and Texas and six other states. The oysters were shipped to these states: Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, Tennessee, and Texas. The oysters may have been distributed in other states. There have been 211 illnesses reported as of December 15, 2022. The case count by state has not been released, nor has the illness onset date range or the patient age range. The FDA is advising restraints and consumers to avoid potentially contaminated oysters from Harvest Area TX 1 in Galveston, Texas. The culprit is norovirus. Last week, the Texas Department of Health and Human Services revealed that an outbreak linked to those oysters has sickened dozens of people in Florida and Texas. The oysters were harvested between November 17, 2022 and December 7, 2022 from that harvest area and were distributed to restaurants and retailers in these states: Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, Tennessee, and Texas. Galveston Bay Oyster Outbreak in Texas, Florida Sickens Dozens

A Galveston Bay oyster outbreak in Texas has sickened dozens of people in that state and also in Florida, according to the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS). A recall of all oysters that were harvested in the TX 1 area of southeastern Galveston Bay has been ordered. No other species of seafood are affected by this recall. The recall includes oysters on the half shell and shucked oysters that were harvested there from November 17, 2022 through December 7, 2022. Dai One Foods Raw Oysters Linked to Sapovirus Outbreak

Dai One Foods raw oysters are linked to a sapovirus outbreak, according to the FDA, which has issued a warning about the shellfish. These oysters were imported from the Republic of Korea. The Southern Nevada Health District notified the FDA of two clusters of illnesses from people who ate the raw oysters at a restaurant in Law Vegas on October 28, 2022 and November 5, 2022. There is one confirmed and nine potential patients. Sapovirus is a highly contagious virus that causes acute gastroenteritis, especially in children. Symptoms include diarrhea, vomiting, nausea, and stomach pain, along with headache, fever, and body aches. The FDA has issued an alert about Oyster Kings Oysters that were imported from Canada because they may be contaminated with Salmonella bacteria. A recall was issued last week in Canada about this issue. No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with this problem. The recalled oysters were sold under many different brand names.
