More Fruit Recalled in Canada Because of Salmonella Outbreak

More fruit recalled in Canada because of a Salmonella outbreak that has sickened at least 14 people in three provinces. There is also a Salmonella outbreak in the United States linked to that brand of cantaloupe that has sickened at least 43 people in 15 states. This recall was triggered by Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) test results. If more products are recalled as a result of the government's investigation, they will be posted at the CFIA web site. These products were sold in the provinces of Alberta, British Columbia, and Manitoba, and many have been sold in other provinces and territories. The FDA is weighing in on the Malichita cantaloupe Salmonella outbreak that has sickened at least 43 people in 15 states. The cantaloupes themselves have been recalled, along with Vinyard brand precut cantaloupe products and ALDI whole cantaloupe and pre-cut fruit products. The case count by state is: Arizona (7), California (1), Georgia (2), Illinois (4), Kentucky (3), Maryland (1), Minnesota (5), Missouri (5), Nebraska (4), Ohio (1), Oklahoma (1), Texas (3), Virginia (1), Washington (1), and Wisconsin (4). The patient age range is from 1 to 100 years. Illness onset dates range from October 17, 2023 to November 6, 2023. Seventeen people have been hospitalized because they are so ill. Minnesota Salmonella Outbreak Linked to Malichita Cantaloupes

A Minnesota Salmonella outbreak linked to recalled Malichita cantaloupes has sickened at least five people in that state, according to the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH). This outbreak is linked to a larger multistate outbreak, in which at least 43 people in 15 states are sick. One person in the Twin Cities metro area has been hospitalized because they are so sick. Illness onset dates range from October 25, 2023 to November 4, 2023. The patient age range was not given in the Minnesota outbreak announcement, but nationwide the age range is from one to 100. A Malichita cantaloupe Salmonella Sundsvall outbreak has sickened at least 43 people in 15 states, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Seventeen people have been hospitalized because they are so sick, for a hospitalization rate of 39%, which is high for this type of outbreak. The cantaloupes in question are the Malichita brand that have been recalled. Malichita Cantaloupe Salmonella Outbreak in Canada Sickens 8

A Malichita cantaloupe Salmonella outbreak in Canada has sickened at least eight people in British Columbia, according to the British Columbia Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC). Those cantaloupes have been recalled in the United States as well, although no illnesses are reported here. The eight cases in British Columbia are aged 0 to 68. They live in the Vancouver Coastal Health, Fraser Health, and Island Health regions. The rare strain of Salmonella that has caused these illnesses is Salmonella Sundsvall or Salmonella Soahanina. Genetic sequencing that was conducted with some of the patient isolates and the strain of Salmonella found in the cantaloupes shows a link. Malichita Cantaloupe Recalled For Possible Salmonella

Malichita Cantaloupe is being recalled for possible Salmonella contamination. No illnesses have been reported to the company to date in connection with the consumption of these fruits. The recalling firm is Sofia Produce of Nogales, Arizona, doing business under the name Trufresh. All sizes of fresh cantaloupes packaged in cardboard containers labeled with the Malichita label are included in this recall.
