Butterball Ground Turkey Salmonella Schwarzengrund Outbreak Ends

The Salmonella Schwarzengrund outbreak linked to recalled Butterball ground turkey has ended with 7 sick in 3 states. One person was hospitalized in this outbreak, and there were no deaths. The case count by state is: Minnesota (2), North Carolina (2), and Wisconsin (4). Illness onset dates ranged from December 19, 2018 to March 16, 2019. The patient age range was from less than one year to 71. Butterball recalled more than 78,000 pounds of raw ground turkey products on March 14, 2019 that were shipped nationwide. The turkey was also packaged under the Food Lion and Kroger brands. The turkey was produced in July 2018. Some of this turkey, with establishment number "EST. The Butterball ground turkey Salmonella Schwarzengrund outbreak first reported in a USDA recall notice has sickened 6 people in 3 states, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). One person has been hospitalized. No deaths have been reported. The patient case count by state is: Minnesota (1), North Carolina (1), and Wisconsin (4). Illnesses started on dates ranging from December 19, 2018 to February 2, 2019. The patient age range is from less than one year to 71. Epidemiologic and laboratory evidence indicates that ground turkey produced by Butterball, LLC is the likely source of this Salmonella Schwarzengrund outbreak. Two 2018 Listeria Monocytogenes Outbreaks Sicken 8, Kill One

There were just two Listeria monocytogenes outbreaks in the U.S. in 2018, but the results for those affected were severe. In all, eight people were sickened, all eight were hospitalized because they were so sick, and one person died. The first outbreak was linked to Johnston County Hams. Four people in 2 states were sickened ion that outbreak. One person, who lived in Virginia, died. On October 3, 2018, Johnston County Hams recalled ready-to-eat deli hams. One of the problems with deli meats is that the pathogen can survive the standard cleaning procedures most delis use and can be persistent. In that outbreak, public health investigators used the PulseNet system to find people who were infected with the outbreak strain of Listeria monocytogenes. Johnston County Hams Listeria Monocytogenes Outbreak Ends With 4 Sick

The Johnston County Hams Listeria monocytogenes outbreak has ended with four sick, according to a notice posted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). One person who lived in Virginia died, and the remaining four patients were hospitalized because they were so sick. Johnston County Hams, located in Smithfield, North Carolina, recalled their ham products on October 3, 2018 because of this outbreak. Several other secondary recalls were issued. A Listeria monocytogenes outbreak has been linked to ready-to-eat Johnston County Ham Products, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Four people were sickened in this Johnston County Ham Listeria outbreak; all four have been hospitalized, and one person has died. Johnston County Hams recalled five of their products after this outbreak was identified. Check your freezer to see if you have purchased any of these products. Vaccinations Against Hepatitis A Spike After Worker Diagnosed at Hardee’s in Mecklenburg County, NC

Hundreds of people have been vaccinated against hepatitis A in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, after a worker at a Hardee's restaurant was diagnosed with hepatitis A. Mecklenburg County Public Health opened two clinics to vaccinate people this week with the hepatitis A or immune globulin vaccine. As of 3:30 pm on June 27, 2018, 895 people had been vaccinated against the pathogenic virus. The clinics are located at Public Health’s 249 Billingsley Road and 2845 Beatties Ford Road locations. Hours are 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. Starting on Friday and continuing hrough the weekend, hepatitis A vaccination clinics will be held at the Hal Marshall Center at 700 North Tryon Street.  Hours for that clinic are 3:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Friday, and 10:00 am to 3:00 pm on Saturday and Sunday. Possible E. coli Outbreak at Mexico Viejo Restaurant in Taylorsville, NC; Lawsuits May Be Filed

A possible E. coli outbreak is being investigated at Mexico Viejo restaurant in Taylorsville, North Carolina. Health Director Leeanne Whisnant told news outlets that more than 30 people are sick after eating chicken at that facility. One person has tested positive for an E. coli infection. Apparently, those sickened ate at Mexico Viejo restaurant on June 20, 2018. Whisnant told WBTV that she thinks this is an isolated event. The restaurant has remained open, and no more reports of illness have been received. She also said that everyone who was sickened who was also interviewed by public heath officials have either improved or recovered. Lawsuit Filed after Child Dies from E. coli and Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS)

Food safety lawyer Fred Pritzker filed a lawsuit on behalf of the parents of a young boy who died from E. coli O157:H7 and hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), a form of kidney failure almost always caused by E. coli O157:H7. On September 30, 2012, the two-year-old and his parents visited the petting zoo at the Cleveland County fair in North Carolina, according to documents filed in the lawsuit. Beginning on October 3, 2012, the boy had symptoms of gastroenteritis and bloody diarrhea. He was diagnosed with an E. coli O157:H7 infection and HUS a few days later.  Although the The boy received intensive medical treatment, including dialysis, he died on October 12, 2012. E. coli Outbreak From Cleveland County Fair In NC Grows

The E.coli outbreak associated with the attending the Cleveland County Fair in North Carolina has sickened at least 13 people, according to state health authorities. Of the eight children and five adults who became ill, eight are from Cleveland County, four are from Gaston County and one person is from Lincoln County. Public health officials from the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services and health departments in Gaston, Cleveland and Lincoln counties are working together to investigate the E.coli outbreak among those who visited the fair between September 26 and October 7. So far, they have determined that two of those sickened have confirmed  E. coli O157:H7 infections.
