Miguel’s Cocina 4S Ranch E. coli Outbreak Sickens 13 in San Diego

A Miguel's Cocina 4S Ranch E. coli outbreak has sickened at least 13 people in San Diego, California, according to the County of San Diego Health and Human Services Agency (HHSA) officials.  That restaurant is located at 10514 Craftsman Way in San Diego. The pathogen that caused those illnesses is a Shiga toxin-producing E. coli strain (STEC). That means the bacteria produce a toxin called Shiga toxin that damages red blood cells and can cause kidney failure. The County Health Department of Environmental Health and the county's Epidemiology team are investigating the outbreak. The patient age range is from 6 to 87 years old. A Raw Farm milk Salmonella outbreak has sickened at least nine people in San Diego County, California, according to the County of San Diego health officials. The illnesses are linked to unpasteurized milk products produced by Raw Farm LLC, which is located in Fresno, California. The outbreak began in late September 2023. The County of San Diego Health and Human Services Agency is urging anyone who may have recently purchased Raw Farm LLC raw milk or products made from raw milk to throw it away. The patient age range is from one to 41 years old. All consumed Raw Farm LLC raw milk or milk products the week before they got sick. Four patients were hospitalized because they were so ill, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). There were several recalls issued in relation to this outbreak. A Shigella outbreak at an unnamed hotel in downtown Los Angeles, California has sickened art least six people, according to the Alameda County Health Department. The hotel was the site of a union delegate conference and was held from August 21 to August 24, 2023. The only conference we could find that was scheduled at that time was the Coalition of Kaiser Permanence Union Delegate Conference at the Westin Bonaventure Los Angeles at 404 South Figueroa Street. More than 300 people attended that conference. As of August 31, 2023, the California Department of Public Health is reporting six shigellosis cases from local California local health jurisdictions among event attendees. A Panda Express hepatitis A warning has been issued in Lancaster, California by the County of Los Angeles Public Health. An infected food worker prepared food at the location in late July and early August. The restaurant is located at 44411 Valley Central Way in Lancaster. No additional cases have been identified at this time. But anyone who consumed food or beverages at that restaurant between July 21 and August 4, 2023 is at risk and should get a hepatitis A vaccine. Cyclospora and Salmonella Outbreaks Increase; Remain Mysteries

There are now seven active outbreak investigations on the FDA's CORE Outbreak Investigation Table. Of those outbreaks, only one is solved. The others, including three cyclospora outbreaks, one Salmonella outbreak, one E. coli O26 outbreak, and one E. coli O157:H7 outbreak, remain unsolved. For the first cyclospora outbreak, the case count has increased to 47 sick, up from 39 in the last update. Traceback has been initiated, and samples have been collected and are being analyzed. Raw Farm Raw Cheddar Cheese is being recalled in California for possible Salmonella contamination. The cheese is also subject to a quarantine order announced by California State Veterinarian Dr. Annette Jones. No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with the consumption of this cheese. The recalling firm is Raw Farm LLC of Fresno County. The order applies to "Raw Farm Cheddar," that is packaged in one pound (16 ounce) blocks. The code date that is marked on the plastic wrapper is BEST BY: 03/16/2024 and BATCH# 20230517-1. The Papa Murphy's Cookie Dough Salmonella outbreak has ended with at least 26 people sick in six states, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Four people were hospitalized. Even though this outbreak is over, the government is warning consumers that eating raw cookie dough made with unpasteurized eggs and raw flour is a hazard and can make you sick. The case count by state is: California (2), Idaho (5), Missouri (1), Oregon (8), Utah (4), and Washington (6). That is an increase of eight more patients since the last update on May 23, 2023.
