The mystery Listeria outbreak has ended, and three other outbreaks on the FDA Core Outbreak Investigation Table are still active, according to the FDA. The three active outbreak investigations include the Salmonella Oranienburg outbreak linked to onions imported from Mexico; the Salmonella Thompson outbreak linked to Northeast Seafood in Colorado; and the acute non-viral hepatitis outbreak linked to Real Water Alkaline Bottled Water. The Listeria monocytogenes outbreak sickened 20 people, which is large for an outbreak caused by that pathogen. Salmonella has been in the news a lot lately. So how many active Salmonella outbreaks are there in the U.S.? There are currently four active Salmonella outbreaks in the United States: One linked to red, yellow, and white onions; one linked to seafood sold by a company in Colorado; one linked to salami sticks, and one linked to crabmeat in Maine. Two of those outbreaks are on the FDA Core Investigation Outbreak Table; one is on the USDA Outbreak Table, and the Maine outbreak is not on either because it is not a multistate outbreak. A new Salmonella Thompson outbreak has been linked to fish produced by Northeast Seafood Products. The outbreak has sickened at least 102 people in 14 states. Is seafood commonly contaminated with this pathogen? Let's look at seafood Salmonella outbreaks in the past few years. Salmonella does not occur naturally in fish or shellfish, as it does in poultry. For this food to be contaminated with the pathogen, it must come from an outside source, either in water or production and processing facilities. We don't know what happened in the current outbreak yet. In 2012, a Salmonella Bareilly outbreak associated with tuna imported from India sickened at least 425 people.
