Two New Outbreaks on FDA’s CORE Outbreak Investigation Table

There are two new outbreaks on the FDA's CORE Outbreak Investigation Table, joining three other outbreaks. Only two of the five outbreaks have been solved so far. The first new outbreak is a Listeria monocytogenes outbreak that has sickened at least 11 people. No food has been identified in relation to these illnesses. We do not know the patient age range, where the patients live, illness onset dates, or if anyone has been hospitalized. Samples have been collected and analysis has started in this investigation. The second new outbreak is an E. coli O103 outbreak that has sickened at least 12 people. CDC Issues Alert For High Lead Levels In WanaBana Fruit Puree

The CDC has issued a HAN alert for high lead levels in WanaBana Fruit Puree. At least 22 children are sick with acute lead poisoning after allegedly consuming this product. The FDA, CDC, and state and local partners are investigating a "potential link" between children with high blood lead levels and eating this cinnamon apple puree and applesauce. Patients live in these states: Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana, Maryland, Missouri, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and Washington, The patient age range is from one to three years. May Be 22 Lead Poisoning Cases in WanaBana Applesauce Recall

There are may be 22 lead poisoning cases in the WanaBana applesauce recall issue, according to the FDA. This is an increase of 15 more cases since the last update last week. The FDA and state partners are collecting and analyzing more produce samples of fruit puree and applesauce pouches. So far, the FDA has found no problems with any non-recalled products. The case count by state is: Alabama (12), Arkansas (1), Louisiana (2), Maryland (1), Missouri (1), North Carolina (5), New Mexico (1), New York (2), Ohio (1), Pennsylvania (1), South Carolina (2), Tennessee (1), Texas (1), Washington (1), and unknown (1). FDA on WanaBana Schnucks Weis Applesauce Recall Details

The FDA has posted details on the WanaBana Schnucks Weis applesauce recall for excessive lead contamination. This recall notice was posted on the FDA's Enforcement Report page, not the regular recall page. In all, 2,998,088 units of these products are included in this recall. Seven children in five states are sick with acute lead poisoning after eating the WanaBana Apple Cinnamon Fruit Puree product. The Schnucks Cinnamon Applesauce and the Weis Cinnamon Applesauce are also recalled. The Schnucks recall stated that, "The company’s supplier, Purcell International, notified the company about elevated levels of lead that were found in the cinnamon raw material used by Austrofood SAS, the manufacturer of the applesauce cinnamon pouches." WanaBana Applesauce Acute Lead Poisoning in Children Sickens 7

The FDA states that WanaBana Applesauce acute lead poisoning has sickened at least seven children in five states. The product has excessively high lead levels. That number is an estimate, based on Consumer Complaint and CFSAN Adverse Event Reporting System reports received by the government. The FDA first issued an advisory about the WanaBana product in late October 2023. Two other brand names of applesauce pouches have been recalled: Weis and Schnucks. In response to this investigation, WanaBana has voluntarily recalled all WanaBana Apple Cinnamon Fruit Puree Pouches regardless of expiration date and lot code. Restoration Hardware Recalls Dining Tables for Lead

Restoration Hardware is recalling metal top dining tables because of a risk of lead exposure. Lead is a toxic heavy metal and can cause adverse health effects if ingested. Children can suffer reduced IQ, develop learning disabilities, have stunted growth, hearing damage, and damage to the nervous system and kidneys if they have elevated lead levels in their blood. The recall is for Restoration Hardware's Railroad Tie & Parsons Railroad Tie dining tables. The recalled tables are round or rectangular with thin sheets of zinc/dark gray color metal on the table tops. Ton Shen Recalling Side Head Regulator Tablets for Lead

Ton Shen Health of Chicago is recalling its Life Rising brand of "Side Head Regulator TT" Tablets because they are positive for elevated levels of lead for children under the age of 18. This is the same firm that recalled dietary supplements DHZC-2 Tablets for lead in August 2016, which were linked to the illnesses of two children and the possibility of two deaths. No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with this newly recalled product. The recalled product is Life Rising brand "Side Head Regulator TT" tablets that were sold mostly locally in Chicago area retail stores. Some were distributed to other states via mail order. Ton Shen/ Life Rising Recalls all DHZC-2 Tablets After Reports of Illnesses, Deaths

Ton Shen Health/Life Rising Corporation of Chicago expanded a recall of “DHZC-2” Tablets to include all lots purchased before August 24, 2016 after state and federal health authorities said they were investigating six reports of adverse effects associated with the herbal supplement including the illnesses of two children and the possibility of two deaths. Health officials say the product, which was sold nationwide in retails stores and distributed through mail orders, may be contaminated with elevated levels of lead, a toxic substance. Exposure to anything but small amounts of lead can cause lead poisoning.
