USDA Investigating Boar’s Head Listeria Monocytogenes Outbreak

The USDA investigating Boar's Head Listeria Monocytogenes outbreak, according to U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-CT). That deadly outbreak is linked to that company's deli meats. That outbreak has sickened at least 59 people in 19 states and 10 people have died. The case count by state is: Arizona (1), Florida (3), Georgia (2), Illinois (1), Indiana (1), Louisiana (1), Maryland (8), Massachusetts (3), Minnesota (1), Missouri (3), New Jersey (6), New Mexico (1), New York (17), North Carolina (1), Pennsylvania (2), South Carolina (2), Tennessee (1), Virginia (4), and Wisconsin (1). Representative Rosa DeLauro (D-CT) and Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) are calling for a Boar's Head Listeria investigation in the wake of a deadly outbreak that has killed 10 people and sickened 59. The outbreak is linked to liverwurst deli meat produced by that company at their Jarratt, Virginia plant. There are now 10 people dead and 59 sick in Boar's Head Listeria monocytogenes outbreak, according to the CDC. All 59 people have been hospitalized. The outbreak has affected people in 19 states. Boar’s Head Closes After Listeria Outbreak, Poor Inspections

The USDA states that the Boar's Head facility in Jarratt, Virginia has closed after a deadly Listeria monocytogenes outbreak and years of poor inspection reports. A letter sent to the company by the USDA describes the outbreak and inspection reports as justification for the closure. The USDA states, "your establishment failed to maintain sanitary conditions, as required by 9 CFR 416 et seq., and 500.3(a)(1), based on the determination that your establishment produced and shipped adulterated product." The Federal Meat Inspection Act gives FSIS the authority to set sanitation requirements and refuse to let meat products to be marked, labeled, stamped, or tagged as inspected and passed. Which stores carried Boar's Head deli meat that is linked to a deadly Listeria monocytogenes outbreak? According to the recall notice that was issued on July 26, 2024 and expanded on July 30, 2024, the meats were sold "nationwide." But California published a 25 page list of establishments in that state that may have carried the meats. Now Nine Deaths in Boar’s Head Deli Meat Listeria Outbreak

There are now nine deaths in Boar's Head deli meat Listeria monocytogenes outbreak, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The new death is from New York. Yesterday the CDC said there were eight deaths. And CBS News is reporting that, after a Freedom Of Information Act (FOIA)  request, they received inspection reports for the Boar's Head facility in Jarratt, Virginia. There were 69 records of noncompliance registered by USDA inspectors, including mold and mildew, leaking and pooling water, some with green algal growth, condensation dripping on the product, a rancid smell, insects including flies and a cockroach, and blood in puddles on the floor. Boar’s Head Deli Meats Listeria Recall Vastly Expanded

The Boar's Head deli meats Listeria monocytogenes recall has been vastly expanded to include an additional 7 million pounds of product. Whole genome sequencing showed that a liverwurst sample that was collected by the Maryland Department of Health tested positive for the outbreak strain. At least 34 people in 13 states are sick with listeriosis in the outbreak linked to these products. Two people have died. And 33 of those patients have been hospitalized. The expansion includes 71 products that were produced between May 10, 2024 and July 29, 2024, under the Boar's Head and Old Country brand names.
