Wawona Salmonella Peaches Recalled In More Countries
Wawona Salmonella Peaches are being recalled in more countries around the globe, after being linked to an outbreak in the U.S. and in Canada. As of August 28, 2020, the governments of Canada, Singapore, and New Zealand have issued recalls. And information received by the FDA indicates that the recalled peaches were shipped to the countries of Australia, Canada, China, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Panama, the Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, and the United Arab Emirates. The FDA is sharing information with the food safety authorities in those countries. In the U.S., the case count remains at 78 sick in 12 states and 23 hospitalized, as of August 28, 2020. Salmonella Enteritidis Peach Outbreak Grows to 78 Cases in 12 States
The Salmonella enteritidis peach outbreak has now grown to include 78 people in 12 states, according to an update by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Twenty-three people have been hospitalized because they are so ill. The outbreak has been linked to recalled Prima Wawona and Wawona Packing peaches and some products made with those peaches. The FDA says that Wawona Packing peaches linked to a Salmonella outbreak have sickened at least 68 people in nine states. The peaches were sold at ALDI stores in certain states. As of August 19, 2020, ALDI has voluntarily recalled all of the Wawona brand bagged peaches from select stores in multiple states. The FDA has updated its investigation into the Cyclospora outbreak linked to Fresh Express salads and has found canal water positive for cyclospora. They have identified several farms in the U.S. that may have provided product used in those recalled salads. And now 690 people in 13 states are sick with cyclosporiasis. That is an increase of 49 more cases since the last update on July 24, 2020. Thirty-seven people have been hospitalized. Could the Oregon Salmonella Outbreak Be Part of Larger Outbreak?
Earlier this week we told you about and Oregon Salmonella outbreak that was potentially associated with Si Casa Flores restaurant in Grants Pass, Oregon. According to a report by KOBI5, the food and environmental tests did not find any of that pathogen. This could be because the food that caused the problem has been eaten or discarded, or that the ill persons have another potential source in common. The Josephine County Public Health Department also told that station that the outbreak could be part of a larger Salmonella Newport outbreak that has sickened at least 125 people in 15 states. Because the distribution of cases is so wide in the multistate outbreak, the odds are that a food item is the cause of the outbreak. The Fresh Express cyclospora outbreak that is linked to bagged salad mix containing iceberg lettuce, carrots, and red cabbage produced by Fresh Express has now sickened at least 509 people in 8 states, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). That is an increase of 303 cases since the last update that was issued on June 29, 2020. The epi curve, shown above, graphs the illness onset dates in this outbreak. The curve is going down, which is good news. The lag between illness onset date and the date the government is informed about the illness is due to the time the patient gets sick, sees a doctor, is tested, and gets the test results. That's an increase of more than 300 new cases since the last update on June 29, 2020. Thirty-three people are hospitalized because they are so ill. There is also a cyclospora outbreak in Canada, with exposure to certain Fresh Express salad products as a likely source of these infections. The case count by state is: Iowa (160), Illinois (151), Kansas (5), Minnesota (63), Missouri (46), Nebraska (48), North Dakota (6), and Wisconsin (30).
