Deadly Cantaloupe Salmonella Outbreak Cases Now at 117

The deadly cantaloupe Salmonella outbreak has now sickened at least 117 people in 34 states, with 61 people hospitalized and two deaths in Minnesota, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). That's an increase of 18 new cases, 16 new hospitalizations, and two new states since the last update was issued six days ago. Cantaloupe Salmonella Cases Soar to 99 With Two Deaths

The cantaloupe Salmonella outbreak has grown rapidly, with 56 more cases in 32 states, 28 new hospitalizations, and two deaths, according to the CDC. Two more recalls have been issued. That's an increase of 56 new cases, 28 new hospitalizations, and 17 new states since the last update was issued seven days ago. The deaths are also new. The cantaloupes themselves have been recalled, along with Vinyard brand precut cantaloupe products and ALDI whole cantaloupe and pre-cut fruit products. Seventeen people have been hospitalized because they are so sick, for a hospitalization rate of 39%, which is high for this type of outbreak. The cantaloupes in question are the Malichita brand that have been recalled. The Sun Sprouts alfalfa sprouts Salmonella Typhimurium outbreak has ended, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) with 63 sick in eight states. That is an increase of 48 more patients  and five more states since the last update on December 30, 2022. Ten people were hospitalized because they were so sick. The sprouts were recalled on December 29, 2022. The case count by state is: Arizona (1), Iowa (6), Kansas (6), Missouri (9), Nebraska (26), New Hampshire (1), Oklahoma (1), and South Dakota (13). New states added to this outbreak are Arizona, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, and New Hampshire. The patient age range is from less than one to 83 years. The number two outbreak of 2022 was the Mariscos Bahia seafood Salmonella outbreak that sickened at least 39 people in four states. That seafood was recalled on October 20, 2022, and included fresh salmon fillet, fresh deep skin salmon fillet, fresh salmon portions, Chilean seabass (fillet and portions), halibut (fillet and portions), tuna (fillet and portions), and swordfish (loin, fillet, and wheel). The case count by state was: Arizona (13), California (24), Illinois (1), and Texas (1). The patient age range was from 1 year to 80 years. Of 32 people who gave information about their illness to public health investigators, 15 were hospitalized. The number six outbreak of 2022 was the hepatitis in strawberries outbreak that sickened at least 19 people in four states. Thirteen of those patients were hospitalized, which is very high for this type of outbreak. This hepatitis A outbreak ended in August 2022. The illnesses were linked to HEB organic strawberries and FreshKampo strawberries. The case count by state was: Arizona (1), California (16), Minnesota (1), and North Dakota (1). Mariscos Bahia recalls fish that is associated with a Salmonella Litchfield outbreak that has sickened at least 33 people in three states according to the FDA. Thirteen people have been hospitalized in this outbreak because they are so sick. The patient case count has not changed since the initial outbreak investigation was announced last week. The illnesses are linked to fresh, raw salmon supplied to restaurants in California and Arizona by Mariscos Bahia, Inc. The case count is: Arizona (11), California (21), and Illinois (1). Salmonella Litchfield Outbreak Linked to Mariscos Bahia Salmon

A Salmonella Litchfield outbreak linked to Mariscos Bahia fresh raw salmon products has been announced by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). At least 33 people in three states are sick, and 13 people have been hospitalized. The salmon was supplied to restaurants in two cities in California and Arizona by that company. The fish sold to restaurants by Mariscos Bahia, Inc. include salmon, tuna, Chilean sea bass, swordfish, and halibut. The restaurants are located in Pico Rivera, California and Phoenix, Arizona. This fish was not sold directly to consumers in grocery stores or markets. The Fratelli Beretta antipasto Salmonella outbreak is the number three multistate food poisoning outbreak of 2021. There were two types of Salmonella in this outbreak: Infantis and Typhimurium. Forty people in 17 states were sickened, and 12 people were hospitalized. Twenty-six people were sickened with Salmonella Typhimurium, and 14 were sickened with Salmonella Infantis.
