Vinyard cantaloupe fresh cut products are being recalled for possible Salmonella contamination. This secondary recall is for items that were made using prepared cantaloupe. No illnesses have been reported to the company to date in connection with the consumption of these products. The recalling firm is Vinyard Fruit and Vegetable Company of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. These recalled items were sold in Oklahoma through retail and wholesale outlets. This recall is linked to the recall of whole cantaloupes by Sophia Foods, doing business as TruFresh, on November 8, 2023. These items were sold from October 30, 2023 to November 10, 2023. Malichita cantaloupes are being recalled in Canada for possible Salmonella contamination. No illnesses have been reported to the company to date in connection with the consumption of this fruit. The recalling firm is Fruits et Légumes Gaétan Bono. The cantaloupes were sold at the retail level in these provinces: Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and Quebec, and may have been sold in other provinces and territories. Does Indiana Cantaloupe Have a Salmonella Problem?

Last week, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) closed without solving its investigation of a Salmonella Newport outbreak that sickened 11 people in August. But information the agency gathered during its probe unearthed a troubling finding. During interviews with patients, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) learned that people who got sick had eaten cantaloupe or watermelon before developing symptoms of Salmonella infections. Tracing the source of the melons back from the point of purchase, the FDA was able to determine that the melons were grown in Southwest Indiana. Three environmental samples collected from farms there matched the outbreak strain of Salmonella Newport. Cantaloupe Salmonella Outbreak Solved, But No Brands Named

The cantaloupe Salmonella outbreak has been solved, but no brand names or farms were named, according to the FDA. There are only two active outbreak investigations on the FDA CORE Outbreak Investigation Table at this time. Eleven of the seventeen outbreaks the FDA has investigated during 2023 have been unsolved, with no brand name, restaurant, or processor named. The Salmonella Newport outbreak linked to cantaloupe as well as watermelons sickened at least 11 people. The FDA conducted traceback, inspected a facility, collected samples, and analyzed those samples, but could not identify a brand name or farm. FDA Report on 2022 Cantaloupe Salmonella Outbreak

The FDA has issued a report on the 2022 cantaloupe Salmonella outbreak that sickened at least 88 people and hospitalized 32. No specific brand was named, and no grower was named. The cantaloupe was grown in southwest Indiana in the summer of 2022. There is quite a long history of food poisoning outbreaks linked to cantaloupe. The case count for that outbreak was: Georgia (1), Illinois (5), Indiana (17), Iowa (39), Kentucky (3), Michigan (3), Minnesota (4), Missouri (2), Ohio (3), South Carolina  (1), and Wisconsin (10). The last illness onset date was September 13, 2022. The FDA inspected three farms in Indiana, their common packinghouse, and public lands near the farms. History of Food Poisoning Outbreaks Linked to Cantaloupe

In the latest update to the FDA's CORE Outbreak Investigation Table, that agency stated that a Salmonella Typhimurium outbreak that has ended is linked to cantaloupe. This is not the first time that this fruit has caused illnesses. What is the history of food poisoning outbreaks linked to cantaloupe? While the outbreak is over, the FDA says that more information is forthcoming. We do not know the case count by state, but there are at least 87 people who are sick. We also do not know the patient age ranges, or illness onset dates.
