Daily Harvest French Lentil + Leek Crumbles illness case count reaches at least 393, with 133 hospitalized, according to the FDA. The last illness onset date was September 4, 2022. People have been sick with gastrointestinal illnesses, and liver, bile duct, and/or gallbladder illnesses. The FDA says that these illnesses are linked to eating that product. Daily Harvest voluntarily recalled their crumbles on June 17, 2022. In response to complaints, the FDA launched an investigation including an inspection of the company's plant and sample collection. Daily Harvest French Lentil + Leek Illnesses Increase to 386

The Daily Harvest French Lentil + Leek illness count has increased to 386 in 39 states, with 130 people hospitalized, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). That's an increase of 17 more patients since the last update on August 25, 2022. This number is an estimate based on Consumer Complaint and CAERs reports received by the FDA. And the case count was revised downward in July 2022 once the investigation started. FDA Updates 10 Outbreaks on CORE Investigation Table

The FDA has updated 10 outbreaks on CORE Investigation Table that are still active, including adding a new Salmonella outbreak to the list. The case counts have increased for five of the 10 outbreaks. An outbreak of Salmonella Mississippi has sickened at least 99 people, which is a very high number for a first announcement. In that investigation, traceback has been initiated but no product has been identified. For the E. coli O157:H7 outbreak in an unidentified food, which is probably the Wendy's romaine lettuce outbreak, traceback has been initiated, on-site inspections have been conducted, and sample collection and analysis has begun. Consumer Reports Says Skip Products Made With Tara Flour

Consumer Reports is advising consumers to skip products made with tara flour for now. That ingredient is a food additive that Daily Harvest says is the culprit causing more than 300 illnesses in consumers who ate that product. Anecdotal reports puts the number of illnesses closer to 500. There is no actual information on what may be in that product that is causing the illnesses, with symptoms that suggest liver disease. At least 25 patients had their gallbladders removed. Symptoms include fever, fatigue, jaundice, vomiting, diarrhea, and high liver enzyme levels. Dr. James E. New Cyclospora Outbreak, Two Outbreaks Ended Unsolved

A new cyclospora outbreak has been added to the FDA's CORE Outbreak Investigation Table, while two other outbreaks have ended unsolved. The new cyclospora outbreak has sickened at least six people. The food responsible has not yet been identified. And traceback has been initiated. This joins the other cyclospora outbreak that was announced last week, with at least 60 sick and no food, again, identified. Traceback has been initiated in that investigation, and samples have been collected for analysis. The two outbreaks that have ended are the Salmonella Paratyphi B var. More illnesses have been reported with the Daily Harvest French Lentil + Leek Crumbles issue, according to the FDA. As of July 28, 2022 there have been 329 CAERS reports and Consumer Complaints related to this product, and 113 of those people have been hospitalized. Tara Flour Culprit in Daily Harvest Lentil Crumbles Illnesses

Daily Harvest has identified tara flour as the apparent culprit in the illnesses that may be linked to that company's French Lentil + Leeks Crumbles. The FDA reports that there have been 277 adverse event complaints received so far, and that 96 people have been hospitalized because they are so ill; some have had their gall bladders removed. There have been almost 500 anecdotal reports of illness. The FDA has not commented on this new information as of July 19, 2022. The FDA is investigating French Lentil and Leek Crumbles illnesses. That product is produced by Daily Harvest. Consumer complaints of gastrointestinal illness and abnormal liver function have been received and "may be attributable" to eating Daily Harvest French Lentil and Leek Crumbles frozen product.
