There are now 892 sick in Salmonella onion outbreak that is linked to red, white, and yellow onions imported from Mexico as of November 12, 2021. One hundred eighty three people have been hospitalized. That is an increase of 84 new cases, one new state (Hawaii), and 26 new hospitalizations since the last update on October 29, 2021. Onion Salmonella recalls, including secondary recalls, have started in association with a huge outbreak that has sickened at least 808 people in 37 states and Puerto Rico. The onions were imported from the State of Chihuahua, Mexico. It's important to understand that if you aren't sure whether or not onions you have in your home are part of this recall, you should throw them away anyway. The cost of replacing onions is minimal compared to the cost of a Salmonella infection. The recalls started on October 21, 2021 and continue to this day. The FDA has published the Keeler Family Farms Salmonella onions retail distribution list, associated with the huge multistate Salmonella Oranienburg outbreak that has sickened at least 808 people in 37 states. The list is very short, as opposed to the retail distribution list for ProSource Produce onions, which was released a few days ago. The retail distribution list for Keeler Family Farm Salmonella onions is for HelloFresh meal delivery services, and Gordon Food Service stores, located in several towns in Ohio and Pennsylvania. The recall notice states that the onions from Keeler Family Farms were distributed to wholesales, retail stores, and restaurants in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. Salmonella has been in the news a lot lately. So how many active Salmonella outbreaks are there in the U.S.? There are currently four active Salmonella outbreaks in the United States: One linked to red, yellow, and white onions; one linked to seafood sold by a company in Colorado; one linked to salami sticks, and one linked to crabmeat in Maine. Two of those outbreaks are on the FDA Core Investigation Outbreak Table; one is on the USDA Outbreak Table, and the Maine outbreak is not on either because it is not a multistate outbreak. The recall of ProSource Produce onions for possible Salmonella contamination in Canada has been updated with a farm name. Gwillimdale Farms onions imported from Mexico are recalled. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency discovered this information during their investigation. Onions imported from Mexico are linked to a Salmonella outbreak in the United States that has sickened at least 652 people. However, there have been no reported illnesses in Canada that are associated with the consumption of these onions. There is no indication at this time that Green Giant Fresh onions are associated with any illness. The recalling company is Potandon Produce LLC of Idaho Falls, Idaho. The Green Giant Fresh onions were delivered directly to three UNFI retail distribution centers located in Fargo, North Dakota; Bismarck, North Dakota; and Hopkins, Minnesota between July 9, 2021 and August 6, 2021.
