FDA weighs in on the Lyons and Sysco Shakes deadly Listeria monocytogenes outbreak that has sickened at least 42 people, hospitalized 41, and killed 14. The outbreak has ended. That is and increase of four more illnesses and two more deaths since the last update was issued in February 2025. The case count by state is: Alabama (1), California (4), Colorado (1), Connecticut (2), Florida (2), Illinois (5), Indiana (3), Maryland (1), Michigan (2), Minnesota (1), Missouri (1), Nevada (1), New York (3), North Carolina (2), Ohio (1), Oklahoma (1), Pennsylvania (1), Tennessee (2), Texas (6), Washington (1), and West Virginia (1). Deadly Lyons and Sysco Frozen Shakes Listeria Outbreak Ends

The deadly Lyons and Sysco ReadyShakes Listeria monocytogenes outbreak has ended with 42 sick, 41 hospitalized, and 14 deaths, according to the CDC. This outbreak investigation has not been updated since February 24, 2025. The products responsible for this outbreak are Lyons ReadyCare and Sysco Imperial Frozen Supplemental Shakes. Lyons Magnus handles the distribution of these products, which  were manufactured and supplied by Prairie Farms. The outbreak strain of Listeria monocytogenes was found by the FDA at the Prairie Farms Dairy in Fort Wayne, Indiana. The patients lived in 21 states. Three New Outbreaks on FDA’s CORE Investigation Table

There are three new outbreaks on the FDA's CORE Outbreak Investigation Table. One is a Salmonella Montevideo outbreak, one is a hepatitis A outbreak, and the other is an E. coli O145:H28 outbreak. There are ten outbreak investigations on the Table. Eight of them are unsolved. The new Salmonella Montevideo outbreak has sickened at least 17 people. Traceback has been initiated. We don't know the patient age range, illness onset dates, or if anyone has been hospitalized. The new E. coli O145:H28 outbreak has sickened at least 11 people. The FDA's take on the Fresh & Ready Listeria monocytogenes outbreak focuses on the source of the pathogen. There are at least 10 patients; all have been hospitalized. The case count by state is: California (8) and Nevada (2). The patient age range is from 41 to 87 years. Illness onset dates range from December 3, 2023 to September 9, 2024. No deaths have been reported. And no illnesses have been identified in 2025. Fresh & Ready has recalled sandwiches and snacks sold in vending machines, hospitals, hotels, airports, airlines, and convenience stores between April 18, 2025 and April 28, 2025 in the states of Arizona, California, Nevada, and Washington. A Fresh & Ready Foods Listeria outbreak has sickened at least 10 people, and all of those patients have been hospitalized because they are so sick, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The company has recalled some of its ready to eat products, including sandwiches and protein packs. They were sold to retail stores, hospitals, hotels, airports, and airlines in the states of Arizona, California, Nevada, and Washington. The case count by state is: California (8) and Nevada (2). The patient age range is from 41 to 87 years. Illness onset dates range from December 3, 2023 to September 9, 2024. No deaths have been reported. And no illnesses have been identified in 2025. Aladdin Mediterranean Cafe Salmonella Outbreak Sickens 37

The Aladdin Mediterranean Cafe Salmonella outbreak has now sickened at least 37 people, according to an update posted by San Diego County Public Health Services. Nine people have been hospitalized becasue they are so sick. That's an increase of 23 more patients and four more hospitalizations since the original notice was posted on May 1, 2025. The restaurant is located at 5420 Clairemont Mesa Boulevard in San Diego. Management voluntarily closed the restaurant on May 1, 2025. They have been working closely with the county's Environmental Health and Quality Department along with Public Health Services on the investigation. The patient age range is from 1 to 90 years old. Aladdin Mediterranean Cafe Salmonella Outbreak Sickens 14

An Aladdin Mediterranean Cafe Salmonella outbreak has sickened at least 14 people in the Claremont area of San Diego, California, according to the San Diego County Health Department. That restaurant is located at 5420 Clairemont Mesa Boulevard in San Diego. The patients range in age from 18 to 79. Five people have been hospitalized becasue they are so sick. The  patients reported eating at that restaurant between April 25 and April 26, 2025. No source of the outbreak has been determined yet. The county's Environmental Health and Quality Department is investigating this outbreak along with Public Health Services. USDA Withdraws Framework to Reduce Salmonella in Poultry

USDA is withdrawing its proposed framework to reduce Salmonella in poultry. In October 2022, that agency released the framework to reduce Salmonella infections linked to poultry. Food safety advocates were pleased to see this framework and were hopeful it would lead to fewer illnesses and deaths. In that announcement the USDA stated, "The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that Salmonella bacteria cause approximately 1.35 million human infections and 26,500 hospitalizations in the United States every year. Of those infections, over 23% are attributed to poultry consumption." The framework had three key components that, together, supported a comprehensive approach to controlling Salmonella in poultry. Alabama Cyclospora Outbreak Caused by Unlicensed Distributor

In the summer of 2023, an Alabama cyclospora outbreak was allegedly caused by produce obtained from an unlicensed distributor, according to the CDC's Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report for the week of April 17, 2025. The patients ate at a Mexican-style restaurant in that state. Cilantro was identified as the likely food source. Traceback identified the cilantro and the likely distributor. In early June 2023, five cases were confirmed by the Alabama Department of Public Health (ADPH). All patients had the common exposure at one restaurant. An outbreak investigation was launched on June 7, 2025. Multivariable analysis of case-control study data found that illness was associated with consumption of cilantro. D. Effe T. Pastries Recalled in Canada For Salmonella

D. Effe T. Pastries, in addition to more Sweet Cream pastries, are being recalled in Canada for possible Salmonella contamination. There are ten more products that are included in the recall. There is one illness that may be associated with the consumption of these products. The recalling firm is Importations Piu Che Dolci Inc. A Salmonella outbreak linked to other recalled Sweet Cream pastries sickened at least 61 people in Canada and 18 people in the United States. That outbreak was declared over in March 2025.
